Link for the service manual: http://elektrotanya.com/pioneer_vsx-305_405.pdf/download.html On page 50 of the manual (36 of the pdf) it says for the "Sub woofer pre-out jack (Not available on the VSX-305 model) If you want to boost the low frequencies, connect to a subwoofer power amplifier" Your model will not drive a sub-woofer with out another amp. His sub may be a powered sub?
Go to eservice: http://www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2 and search for VSX-305. You can downlaod the manual. The service manual is widely found with a google search but is also listed at the eservice website. Oh, Ebay has the service manuals as well.
It is likely failing due to age.Cold solders fail, corrosion can cut a connection, a capacitor can harden and fail... a myriad of things can happen in time. Repairing it will cost more than an inexpensive replacement. The same receiver can be had on ebay from $60 up (with shipping). It is a cost benefit issue at this point.
I have never seen RCA to digital conversion, and if it did exist you would have to convert from digital to analog in order for this to work, the sound quality would be degraded and unreliable, plus sound level would drop.
