Question about Garden

Honda lawnmower GXV 140

My Honda Mower is about 14 years old. It goes well but every now and then it seems to run rich & tries to die. It loses power & blows black smoke out of the exhaust & I have to push throttle flat out or sometimes on choke to keep it going. I've cleaned the carby out & checked fuel supply etc to no avail. It has done this from almost new & of course it never plyed up when I took it back under warranty. Can you help? Lou.

I have a similar Honda (with the overhead valves) that someone gave me because it didn't run at all. Turns out it had a stuck open exhaust valve. I got it unstuck and changed the oil. After running it about an hour, the valve stuck again. I think this is an inherent problem with these engines. I cleaned up the valves really well and lubricated them. Then I put a high quality synthetic (actually motorcycle racing) oil in it and have been running it for a year now with no problems. Not sure what your issue is, but with stuff blowing out of the exhaust and loss of power, I'd pull the valve cover off (prop up the front of the mower and you can do this without losing any oil). Check your valves and give them a good cleaning. They may not be seating properly, which would cause the symptoms you describe. I'm just an amateur, but I'm learning every day! Hope this helps and best of luck to you Lou.

Lawn Mower runs rough & dies has black sooty spark plugs

A good place to start would be to remove air cleaner assembly and give it a good wash and service and take a close look at choke assembly/lever to be sure it isn't sticking in on position, while trying to run it with air filter off..

One year old bolens push mower, 550 series B&S

How is your compression? If it is low, your piston rings and/or the cylinder walls could be damaged and pulling oil up to the combustion chamber, which will burn oil and foul the plug. If you overfill the oil you could possibly get this also. When was the last time that you changed the oil and/or put oil in it? Do you currently have proper oil level?

Have you checked the choke that it is off after you get the engine started, the black smoke is definitely from the choke, if you take the carb off and check that the needle closes when it should,as one can easily do an adjustment by bending the float/tab,rgds

your valves might be sticking due to old gas when you had some or the little rod clutch rod to the carb is disconnected this is just to choke it before it dies out.
I sugest that you clean out the carb out with carb cleaner and also clean the valves.
