We have a combo tel/fax line. We can receive faxes if someone is in the office and answers the phone, but if we don't pick up the phone it goes directly to the answering machine..

Yes, you must set up your fax machines like this: The receiving fax must be set to auto receive and the telephone line must be inserted in the "line" input. A line must then be connected from the "Tel" to the "Line" of the Transmitting machine, which must be set to "manual receive." This is not really a satisfactory way of doing things as you can't send and receive 2 machines on the same line together. A much better way is to have 2 lines. with a machine attached to each. Get the tel company to put "No answer transfer" on the line as an accesory. Give them the number of the fax machine that transmits. Make it "manual receive" Now you have a versatile system that you can also use the office telephone with.

It will only automatically pick up the line when set to "fax". You need to subscribe to a "distinctive" ring (which is a double ring) service through your telephone company and set the rings to answer appropriately so as to not conflict with your voicemail

Problem lies in your Receive Mode setting. If you don't have a dedicated phone line for the fax machine, you need to set it up for either Manual where you answer every call or Fax/Tel whereby the Fax machine determines if the incoming call is a fax or phone call. This is a known problem with the MX850 - Canon thinks it works, but it needs to be FAX Only when you're out of the office and TEL PRIORITY when you're in the office - then you hit "Hook" when you hear an incoming call as a fax tone. It's a manual answer machine when in TELEPHONE Priority

if the fax is connected to the same line and you have a phone connected to the fax you need to make sure you connect the line from the socket at wall to the correct socket on the fax you can check this by looking at the point the line is connected on fax there should be two connectors one says line and one says tel.. the line in goes to the line socket and your telephone goes into the tel socket.. if you have them the other way round it cant connect properly..on the front display panel make sure you have it set to the auto setting or tel fax mode for receive.. if you have it to auto it will check the incoming call if it is a fax it will send it through if not it will ring till you answer.. if set to tel/fax mode when it rings you will have to answer the phone and manually press start if you hear it is a fax.. The telephone attached to the machine will ring. Pick up the handset to answer the call. Note: If you are far from your machine, you can use the remote receiving function to receive faxes. Pick up the handset of the telephone connected to the machine and press 25 (the remote receiving ID).

The short answer is no. The JX200 will work with an answering machine because it "listens in" when the answering machine picks up a call. It can't "listen in" to voice mail, because the voice mail is handled by your phone service.

I am not really familiar with your machine, but have worked on faxes for 20 years. Most models are fax, fax/tel, and tel, meaning it is either or, or a combination. The function you seek was on many models with a built in answering machine. As the machine answered, you said in your message to press start now, or leave a message.

I would say, use your *9* solution with phone while you are there, but switch it to fax mode when you leave. Any regular call coming in at that time will not get answered anyway, but faxes would automatically be received. I know it is an extra step, but that would work.

I think I know why. You need to set the proper priority of your all-in-one Canon device.
If it is TEL priority, it means you need to have a phone connected to the fax. If the phone rings, you need to pick up the handset and check if it's a fax tone or a call. If it is fax tone, you wait for 5 secs til fax tone stops, and then hang up. After that you will receive the fax. Failure to pick up the handset will not allow you to receive the fax. This might be the most probable setting you have, hence you can't receive the fax.
If it is FAX priority, the same thing happens as TEL priority. Only difference is if you don't pick up, and it is a fax, it will still receive.
You can also do FAX only. No need to connect a phone. Device will receive automatically.

please check if the machine is set to correct answering mode i.e. TAD/FAX ?correct it if otherwise. in case it is ok please check whether the DRPD mode may not be switched off ,pls correct it.. HAPPY FAXING HEMANT GROVER
