I have an E39927 Type 776-0 dishwasher. The problem began this week, in that water does not fully drain from the dishwashwer following the end of any of the washing cycles. The unit seems to be functioning & cleans as it should, but water remains after the cycle finishes.

Disconnect the drain hose from under the sink. place it into a bucket and put the dishwasher to drain. if it drains in the bucket fine then you know you have a problem with your drain. if it doesnt drain, then the problem is most likely the drain pump

Pull the dishwasher out of the slot. There is a motor underneath that runs the pump to drain it. The usual cause is the it has a bad connection.

Water isn't coming out, and after a while, a slight burning smell arises. Any suggestions?

When you find that the dishwasher is not draining fully, you'll have to take up certain steps of plumbing to assure that it begins to function properly again. Here's how:
Identify Type
First of all, identify the type of dishwasher that you have. Is it a forward reversing or direct drive dishwasher. A direct drive dishwasher is one in which the dishwasher simply drains out the water. Whereas a forward reversing dishwasher has a motor in it that will stop and start to move in the opposite direction. If there is a problem with the motor, then the end result is that of the dishwasher not draining fully and that's where the problem lies.
Check for Garbage Disposal
Sometimes, a garbage disposal is installed into the kitchen area that shares it's space with the dishwasher unit. Check to see if the knock-out plug of the garbage disposal was removed before installing it. If this was not done, then simply remove it and the dishwasher should work as good as new.

Check the Drain
More often than not, the clogging of the drain will lead to dishwasher not draining all the way. Check to see if the water in the sink takes a long time to go into the pipe and whether it is accompanied by water bubbles. If this is the case, it means that you need to unclog kitchen sink Disconnect the pipe and check to see if there is any debris or build up. Then use sink drain repair to get rid of the problem.
While you are at it, check to see the pipe that separately connects the water supply to the dishwasher. The build up might well be in this pipe.
Inspect the Dishwasher Basket
Check the dishwasher basket next. Slowly and gently, disconnect the basket and check to see if there is any gunk and debris build up in this. If there is plenty, this might be the problem of why dishwasher not draining completely. All you need to do is clean all the parts thoroughly. But be careful not to exert any pressure or force and bend the parts out of shape. Remember you have to fit them back again. Clean the basket with wet rags and then fit back.

Whirlpool dishwasher is not fully draining after cycle complete

THE PROBLEM SOUNDS TO BE WITH THE INSTALLATION OF THE DISHWASHER ITSELF. YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOUR DRAIN HOSE IS NOT KINKED AND ALSO THAT THE DRAIN HOSE FORMS A LOOP. IN OTHER WORDS IT SHOULD GO STRAIGHT UP BEHIND THE UNIT AND THEN DOWN INTO THE SINK OR DISPOSAL.THIS SHOULD TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROBLEM.

Following a cycle, a small pool of clean water inside the tub is typical. Excessive water means the pump isn't pumping water out properly, the drain hose isn't carrying it to the drain pipe, or the house's drain lines are backed up. If dirty water spews from the air gap, the drain line is kinked or clogged. Note: If you've recently installed a garbage disposer, be sure the knockout plug for the dishwasher was removed when the connection was made (see your disposer instructions).
