Yamaha RX-497 won't turn on. A power surge may have caused the problem. A friend who was at home at the time reported a power problem, and the receiver turned itself on, and then off, never to go again. When On/Off is pressed, the relay doesn't click, and nothing, even the devices connected to the switched outlets, turns on. The 2 fuses on the Main 2 board are OK. No burned-electronics smell evident inside.

This is ridiculous. I'd had this receiver for a few years, and had completely forgotten that there are 2 "power switches. One turns power off altogether, and the other just turns off "soft power" so that the receiver is off, but it still listens for the remote.

(continued) A friend who was visiting turned off the "off altogether" switch, and I didn't notice it. It's a tiny button labeled "Master", just above the BIG button labeled "Main Zone". Turning on the "Master power button solved the "problem". I'm embarrassed.

Needless to say, turning on the Master power solved the problem.

How to reset yamaha receiver rx 497

First check all you speaker wiring and connections for short circuits and bad connections. Also check the speakers are working correctly.
If that doesn't correct the problem, then it's probable that an internal fault has developed in the main amp section. Till that is fixed then the amp will continue to shut down.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ELECTRONIC GOODS AGAINST POWER SURGES

I have only been giving advice on FIXYA for a very short while but have noticed that an awful lot of the people who relate their product issues , particularly complain about faults developing after power cuts / outages. It is apparent, from a description of the complaints, that damage is being caused by outages that may be a result of power surges blowing electricity sub stations.
There are a lot of damaged audio devices / tvs being affected. As such I advise you TO BUY SURGE PROTECTORS for all you valuable devices.
I have them around the house and although we only get an occasional power cut here in the UK I know that at times they have saved my equipment fron power spikes. The small cost is justified in the long run.

Yamaha RX-V1400 receiver powers off, in case it becomes louder

Hey, yeah that can be frustrating.

When you turn it up do you hear the relay or a clicking sound, then you turn it on and it comes back below the +2db?

Try unplugging All the speaker wires from the unit. Turn on the unit and listen for the click.
after the click, turn it up past the 2+ db mark and see if you hear it click or shut down. If it did not click off, then suspect a shorted crossover on one of your speakers.
2nd test is to plug in One speaker, and test it at high volume, it will not harm it. If it shuts off disconnect that speaker and try another. Only one at a time.
If it works at high volume, you need to isolate one of your speakers and i bet it has a shorted crossover that has been cooked. P.S. If one is bad, suspect they will fail at a later date.
If they all fail, use a friends speaker and try it before sending it to a repair shop.

P.S. i found one on ebay i think you can get for under $100 bucks in the box.
