i dnt knowwat type of speaks u got but ifits low then it cud be tht u have too open up the second coil on ur speakers...dnt sound like the amp since its on & not in protect mode,other than tht i'll recheck the wiring

Despite the fact that they claim that the amplifier is 500 watt RMS if you look at the fuse it has on it, which should be one 30Amp fuse it means that the max that you might get out of this amplifier is 300 watt RMS. So an 8 Gauge cable will be more than enough for it. However, saying that, using a 4 gauge cable will not harm it in any way. what you should check before buying a 4 gauge cable is if it will actually fit in the allocated 12V terminal.
