When the oven is turned on the oven starts to heat up. After a while the house supply RCD will trip. I have replaced the oven element which allowed the oven to function for two weeks but the probem has returned. I changed the element again and this time it lasted one week then the RCD started tripping again.

I suspect not the oven element at fault. you only way forward is to actually test the resistance of the element to earth with a megga if you can beg the use of one. be cautious about the result as on occasion, elements are only faulty to earth when hot. another way to test if you are cdarefull, is to connect the element to mains independently of the oven and see if the rcd trips

The elements in ovens consist of an outer earthed metal tube and an inner resistive element that is insulated from the outer tube by what is effectively a compressed ceramic insulating powder. If the element is not used for a while, enough atmospheric moisture, (or from spills, etc), can penetrate the insulation to cause enough earth leakage to trip the RCD. If the RCD is tripping at the correct level, (They can get too sensitive - see this article here: Diagnosing RCD earth leakage breaker nuisance trips), then the only long term solution is to replace the element, although they can sometimes be dried out by heating them.
I take it this will be an electric oven. If so the likely hood is that the oven element has blown and will need replacing. Normally when elements short they will trip the houses RCD (once only normally)
This tutorial will show you how to check your Smeg element and how to replace your Smeg cooker element.
Here are the 3 main faults to look for in your oven or cooker that is not heating
Your oven will not work until the clock/timer has been re-set after replacing an oven element or tripping the electrical supply. Consult your Smeg manual.
If your Oven is not getting hot or heating up it could be a faulty element, if the fan in the oven is running and the thermostat light is on, this will lead us to believe that the element has gone faulty. With grills the thermostat light should come on there should be heat, if not then this could be the grill element or the thermostat.
When you turn the oven on, the household electrical supply trips on the Rcd (this is the earth trip in the fuse board sometimes called the breaker tripping) your fan oven element has gone to earth and needs replacing.

I have a u1421 with the same problem! I notice the fan doesnt run too well, sometimes it doesnt run at all, needs a prod to get it running. I suspect with no fan, that the element gets far too hot, and then starts to leak to earth, tripping the RCD. I'm gonna try buying a new fan motor - you should ckeck if your fan is running full speed OK.
