Hi Beverly,
My suggestion is that you join up the Yahoo group called "Elna Heirlooms" you'll find lots of very helpful fellow supermatic owners there and probably what you are looking for too. Here is one page from the manual for threading the bobbin into tension, once you've mastered this on the Elnas, its the same for all the Swiss ones.
Yes, top threading is important, you need to get the thread into the tension discs and also the take up lever. Have you cleaned out the tension discs too? these do get gummed up with fibres and dye particles sometimes. Just turn tension down to zero and "floss" between discs with the selvage edge of a clean piece of waste cotton fabric.
Might see you over on Yahoo, several of the members there are really knowledgeable on these great machines.
cheers

The page you included in your response was way to small to read,. Need to learn how to adjust the tension. Do you know where I can get a owners manual? Also I need the knee pedal-do you know where I might get one? I am currently using a Bernina knee pedal but it is at the wrong angle so I have to use my hand to operate it . How do I connect with "Elna Heirloom"?
yes, its so hard to post images here. In Fix ya "connect" with me and I'll see if that lets me message you.
Are you in the USA? if yes, you need to check out the White Sewing Center, he is the Swiss Elna guru. www.whitesewingcenter.com He'd have knee controls I'm sure.
To get into Yahoo, go to www.yahoo.com and sign up to get a yahoo account. then on the left of the page click on "Groups" and search for "Elna Heirlooms", then you have to ask to join the group. In an hour or two the moderator should respond approving your membership. Then you can choose to receive regular emails or just browse on line. I'd suggest you check out the "files" first, you should find images of what you want.
just remembered;
There is a threading up diagram at www.sewusa.comhttp://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams...
if you email me at [email protected] I can send you a manual.
