Toshiba 50H72 no picture, no sound

Bill,
Saw a solution from you on the message board and I'm hoping you can help. I had a convergence problem as noted by many folks out there. Replaced the two IC's and an obviously blown resistor. Unfortunately, now I get no picture, no sound, just the red power light. Nothing in the back looks obviously blown or damaged. Please advise on where to go from here. Thanks!

Frank

You really should get a service manual for this set to check the voltages. If you found out what the wire was for that you remove from the board to get the set to come on, you could troubleshoot and narrow down your problem. Without it you would be guessing. Good Luck and let us know how you made out.

SOURCE: Accessing convergence in menu

Ellite,
That is a TA0262 chassis and from what you're describing it could be a one of two things. A picture would speak volumes if you can send one...
If it's convergence you should be able to replace the amps, check and/or replace a couple of pico fuses and resistors and you're good to go. But from what you're explaining and what djnick was understanding the problem to be it sounds a bit like what techs call piecrusting - affecing only the outer edge(s) of the picture. If so, it's likely the hyper module Toshiba p/n# 23148024 and more specifically the grouping of caps on that module that have failed. More specifically 11 caps all 10mf/16v at the following pos#'s:
Cx261
Cx230
Cx270
Cz52
Cx178
Cx221
C514
Cx250
Cx670
Cx241
Cx541

They're an smd cap and most of us simply replace them with miniatures and just clip the leads to fit.. Or you could just pull the board and send it ti a reputable shop and have it done, not an expensive job...
Either way if you have a pic it would be most helpful...

ok i'm goin to need more info about your problem. you stated fuses and didn't say the location numbers of the fuses. Also, have you rechecked your fuses to see if they are all still good? 3 fuses sounds like more then one problem. once you tell us your loc#'s of your fuses, we can look into your problems.

SOURCE: Toshiba 50H72 Convergence IC's replaced now no picture

When I originally removed the board with the convergence IC's I labeled all of the wiring harneses with number tape as I keep a multi number roll on hand as I am a radio broadcast engineer. However there was one set at the very back of the board behind a large heat sink I didn't label because that location was the only place they would fit. When replacing the board after replacing the IC's I missed that particular wiring harness as it didn't have numbers and I didn't see the harness laying among the other wiring. After removing the board to check my soldering work that's when I discovered the harness. I plugged that set in along with the rest, replaced the board, and after cleaning the CRTS's and the mirror the set worked good as new and a much sharper, cleaner picture. Thanks for the information on your forum as it always feels to repair something yourself and save a few hundred bucks to boot.

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

I have a toshiba model 50h72 double vishion

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Toshiba 50H72 problem plz help!

ok well both of you have had the same problem i did... to fix the picture problem check the circuit board pd0074 its the yellowish looking one next to the green one which has the ic's on them... ok on the pd0074 board look for fuses f470, f850, and the f851 to see if they are blown the f470 is what turns the tv on and the f850 and f851 are what protect the convergence ic's chances are they are blown.... the sound i don't know how to fix that problem but i would check all the fuses on that board to find out if one more is blown that what i did but the only thing is that i could get the actually fuses for the tv i was told by a tv repairman in my town to just take 2 wires sodder them on to the fuse and take a glass fuse and put electrical tape around them and it worked like a charm... so i hope this helps you.... the most i spent was 30 dollars for the ic's and the fuses all together and i was quoted at 450 to do what i did myself

Stk392-110 red convergence IC is bad...normal procedure===

1) pull chassis   2) replace both Stk's for reliable repair

3)re-assemble  4) re-align convergence

If you hire a technician, 400.00 is ave. price.

Red color allignment

The convergence Ics need replaced. In Toshiba, resistors and sometimes a coil needs replaced as well. The convergence/deflection PCB is available, but, the cost of that board is higher than having a servicer come to your home and repair the unit to component level. If you are not familar with this circuit, then call a servicer. Have them replace both ICs not just one. Make sure they are repairing to component level and not replacing the board. Hope this helps.
