The main cause is that new DVDs are usually formed with newer formats. Whilst new DVD formats are evolving each year, the outdate DVD player may not be able to handle the latest formats due to the insufficient codecs.

My dvd player on recognizes original dvds but wont read any burnt dvds...WHY???

most of the laptop dvd drives have slower reading speed(about 2x) and writing speed(about 24x) compare to desktop pc's(about 8x and 52x respectively).
ur problem might have occured if the writing speed by which the cd was burnt might not be compatible with ur dvd player.
try playing dvds which were burnt using laptop dvd writers.
also try changing the modes in which the dvds are burnt.

Does not read Cds or DVDs

most sony CD and DVD players have a digital signature design to play CDs and DVDs that are original and licensed. some CDs or DVDs dont work since the player does not recognize or scan any digital signature embedded in the CD or a DVD. 2nd, lens problem causes most players not to read CDs nor DVDs. you can try to buy CD or DVD lens cleaners to have your lens cleaned.

DVD plays in DVD player is not seen at all by Windows XP

Hi,it's obvious from your problem that the particular disc that cannot be viewed on your computer is of a formatt not supported by the windows XP.some DVDs are of low quality which can be viewed practically on any DVD player but as a result of their low quality and the sensitivity of the Windows they are not recognized by your computer. In as much as other DVDS play on your computer,it means there's no problem with your computer, but an unsupported disc formatt is been trying to be viewed and there's nothing you can do to view a DVD formatt not supported by your computer.please don't be bothered.
Thanks and take care

LG and Sony DVD players no longer recognize dvds

Clean the lens with a soft cloth preferably cotton to avoid scratching it. Do not use cotton as it will leave fibers on the lens.

The player plays most every DVDs I burnt. However, I bought identical DVD-R and DVD+R from Staples and SPIN-X brands and it says DVDs unknown. What is the problem?

This player can't recognize DVDs that have a write speed that is greater than 16X (and it sometimes has problems with discs above 8X). I would only buy brands that the manual reccomends as tested. This player also won't accepted what are called "Variable" or "Variable Speed" DVDs.
