Hi,
What do you mean by totally unformatted ?
You should consider using a data recovery software. GetDataBack and Zero Assumption Recovery are one of the best software doing that but they are commercial product. You can use free recovery software but they are not so good.
Do you use the "Unplug securely the flash disk" every time you unplug your Usb drive ? Failing to do so can cause troubles like you have.

Zero Assumption Recovery: http://www.z-a-recovery.com/
A free recovery software link: http://free-backup.info/

My friend and i just bought this hard drive and are both missing about 50 gigs from it. is this normal or should we get it exchanged?

That sounds abnormal but here is how to see. Plug the disk into computer and make sure that it registers. In windows right click on my computer or computer in windows 7 and select manage then select disk management. This will show you the hard drive and it partitions. You will be able to see the partitioned drive here make sure that it is occupying the whole disk. If not format the disk by right clicking the drive and selecting format i would go with ntfs file system. It is not uncommon for the disk to be smaller but not 50 gig. if the format doesn't fix it take it back.

Connected my Verbatim usb 500 external hard drive. It is recognized under Computer Management > Disk Management....but not in My Computer. When I click on its properties it says device is working...

Under DISK MANAGEMENT, you should see the 500GB drive.
Does it show as "formatted" (FAT32? NTFS?) or as "unformatted" ?
If "unformatted", then right-mouse-click on the drive, and 'format' it, and assign it a drive-letter.

Seagate free agent pro 500 gig external hard drive NOT RECOGNIZED

You better check with the Seagate people. This seems to be a problem with the casing. And since you're under warranty, you can get a replacement.
