My HP PSC 1610 is adding about 1/2 inch to the top of all documents printed. I have cleaned the encoder strip, not a disc, and I have checked all the page settings in every document I have tried clean everything readily available to me but I am not sure what else controls the paper input other then the encoder strip. All the feeds seem to be working fine and the paper goes in ok then the printer moves it forward about1/4 to 1/2 inch before it starts printing.

Well are you using the external ink-system? even if you are not the disk encoder and the encoder strip needs to be cleaned. Encoder Strip is the plastic strip connecting from left to right inside the printer near the belt. In the same type of plastic there is an Disk encoder on the left side of the printer you can find it if you open the printer only.

Sounds like a smudge on the encoder strip. The clear plastic behind the carriage assembly. if you hold the paper at the paper path the encoder strip will have the smudge in the same area as on the paper. you can clean it with a damp Q-tip...gently though
1. Click the Start icon, click Control Panel, click Printers and faxes folder. 2. Right Click on the printer icon and Select Properties. 3. In Ports tab of the properties window, check the box beside "Enable bi-directional support". 4. Click OK to confirm the changes.
i cleaned the clear file strip behind the carriage by rubbing it between my fingers and my printer started working again. before that i had paper jam and carriage jam and it wouldn't do any printing or copying.
