I have a black vertical line displaying on my Sony PFM-50C1 plasma. It is1-inch wide vertical black line that runs from the top of the screen to the middle, about 8-inches from the right edge of the display. What can I do to trouble-shoot/repair this? I see that another user was able to get the TV replaced by Sony but I'd like to repair mine if possible (doubt Sony will replace a 8 year old television).

Rakesh, You have a "dual scan" panel, this is why the line only decends down the screen half-way. This could be a connection problem on the buffer board which causes loss of the drive signal only to that part of the display which it is connected to. The vertical address buffer will be located on the top rear of the display, use great caution in inspecting these cables and connectors. If the integrity of the cable and connector is good the panel itself may be bad due to the drive IC being located on the ribbon cable attached to the panel body. this is better known as COF or, chip-on-film technology. I hope this helps you. Good luck. Joe Weibel CustomElectronics.Org

Just want to let you know that the problem you are having is a bad X board. This board may not be available from Sony, because it is sold as part of the panel

Your set is servicable with proper troubleshooting. Normaly, the defective boards are swapped out to service these sets. This fault can be in the address decoder, or the display drive boards. It is also possible that the failure is in the display assembly itself.

My preference would be to give the set to the authorised service rep to have an estimate to deterine if the set is worth to service.

I got white vertical line running down a plasma display panel . they are close together that you cant even see on that side of the tv. on a closer inspection they are blue-green-red-blue-green-.... but...

A vertical line running down a plasma display can be caused by :

faulty buffer module.

Fauly sustain card.

Faulty plasma display.

Try unplugging power cable and see if this helps, if it does not , then you will need to call a technician.

In that case call the support number listed on your owner manual.

If warranty has expired, ask for a warranty extension, if available. this is cheaper than repair cost, and will cover the repair.
