Question about RCA D52W19 52" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

My RCA D52W19 HDTV Ready TV will not turn on. The power led comes on three times after pressing the button on the tv itself or attempting to power on with the remote. The condition has been getting worse over the last couple of months and now the tv will not stay on. Chassis no. is ITC222. Thanks, Aaron

Hi Aaron,

I just want to ask you something before I give the solution, does the unit gone to start-up problem (needs warm-up before it finally turn on, needs to pressed the power button key several times, needs to unplug from the outlet and plug it back in)before, you have said that you've encountered it last few months?

    Hi Jay,

Previously it took a few times of pressing the power button before the TV stays on. Now it does not turn on at all using this strategy. The last time I got the tv to stay powered on was after I unplugged it from the electrical receptical for a couple of hours. I am thinking a capacitor is not discharging or something. I hope you have a cheap solution! I have a soldering iron and am pretty handy..

I look forward to your reply.

    Aaron

    Thanks for the response.

This kind of symptoms is an indication of out-of-regulation condition in the power supply section. This is caused by faulty electrolytic capacitor like what you've suspected.

Leaky electrolytic capacitor has a physical indication of fault like bulged/dome at the top and can be easily identify through visual inspection. Watch this link

If you found them on the power supply section, replaced it with same capacitance and working voltage that is printed on its body itself. Watch this video for more info regarding electrolytic capacitor.

Dried electrolytic capacitor has no physical indication of fault, you must have a capacitor checker/tester to determine its condition and pinpoint the faulty one. If not available, you may replaced all electrolytic capacitor except the largest capacitor. It will not cost you much because this is one of the cheapest part on that board, cost only $0.5 to $4 at the most.

    Hi Jay,

I need a bit more info.. Where in relation to the back panel is the power supply section.. Should I assume it is behind the panel with the electrical power cord..or is that too simple??

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

Yes, the power supply section is where the power cord's directly connected. Unplug the unit for 1 hour to drain any voltages from the power supply before you repair it...

Suspect your POWER SUPPLY. Either your supply is faulty OR something else in your TV is demanding too much CURRENT (from the supply) and your supply may be 'protecting itself' with 'emergency shutdowns'.

These links and PHOTO WILL help you ~ if you are serious about repairs!

I know it's not quite the same model number as yours, but the steps and efforts remain similar.

Finally, this REAL 'old puppy' that DEMANDS LOTS of AC POWER to fire-up your 3 'super-bright' projector lamps inside! Are you sure you won't consider pushing this TV to the curb instead of investing HOURS of your life to fix this one?

I'm confident you have spent LOTS MORE on your POWER BILL (over the years) than the cost of a NEW Flat Screen model! GO ahead ~ you deserve a quality TV... but stick to known brands like LG - VIZIO and Panasonic to avoid the "no parts/boards available" problem (way down the road).

*(Your TV is so old that the Internet has NO CLUE when they first made this model)*? Also I see a whole ARRAY of problems with this series and it's no surprise that yours has similar problems!
