You need to take it a couple steps further after your test print. Sounds like your print heads need cleaning or your cartridge may need aligning. Hi, When using refilled print cartridges, the Estimated Ink level and the Printer Status Window may indicate that the print cartridge is out of ink. Either continue to use the print cartridge until print quality degrades, or replace the print cartridge with a new HP print cartridge.

The methods of replacing the ink cartridge of the printer follows here:
Open the printer cover
The printer ink carriage will automatically goes to center
Once the carriage is in the center, the printer was ready to replace the ink.
Pull the down slowly the ink tank off the carriage..
Remember the place where the color/black position.
Remove each tank one at a time, and replace the ink with a new one.
Close the printer cover and it now ready to printer.

Sounds like your black print head may be clogged. You can get a new one from Precision Roller for $60. Another fact that would confirm that your print head is clogged is if you let the printer sit for more than a few weeks without printing with it.

It is more than likely the print head itself. It seems to be a problem with these printers.

you need to print only in black if that is all the ink you have, and also you need to remove the color cartridge as it still registers in the printer as able to be used, although it is empty or near so. Did you remove the tape over the print head fron the new ink cartridge? Do a print head alignment, or use the toolbox icon to tell the printer that you just replaced the cartridge. Some HP models chip the ink cartridges so even a refill wont register as a full tank and the printer wont print. chip needs to be reset (difficult) or just replaced with a new cartridge.

do you have the canon print management software installed? it's located in the maintenance tab on that software.

Make sure the printer settings are set properly to print in color on the PC. Even if there is a color cartridge, if the PC only tells it to print black ink it's not going to use the color cartridge.
