copy and paste the following link into your browser
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/get-skype/on-your-computer/macosx/
click the "Download Now" button (it's green)
once it has downloaded, depending on the way your MacBook Air is configured, it may start the installation automatically. If it doesn't, then open your downloads folder, and double click the Skype installer (named (Skype_2.*****.dmg the *'s represent numbers) and follow the instructions on screen
Click the Apple in the upper-left corner, then click System Preferences. Click User Accounts. Now, click the lock at the bottom if you need to authenticate and make changes. Highlight your name and click the Login Items tab on the right. Highlight Skype and click the minus (-) button. Now Skype won't start when your computer does. If that doesn't help, open your Applications folder and drag Skype to the trash to remove it from your system. If that doesn't help, something else is causing your computer to slow down.
have you gone into system preferences/sound.input/output settings? try making a free test call, and you can play around with all your settings that way...also helps to keep the volume turned down on your mac, and just adjust it using your headset.
