Hello Steve, welcome to FixYa.

I understand based on your description you have a Heartland 3310 stainless steel (SS) fridge that compressor nor the condensor fan is suddenly not coming on....though the compressor is quite hot, correct ?

Unfortunate that these things seem to happen at the worst time, but this would be something I would consider calling in an authorized appliance technician, but the place I would start is as follows, check the compressor as shown below and if o.k. replace that start relay asap. That is the most likely culprit...but it can be the control itself, though unlikely in my almost 20 yrs. experience.

As I said If you feel like you can trouble shoot further I`ve provided the following info to assist you or you may decide to call a professional appliance technician (as I recommend)...it's your call.

I don`t know the age of your fridge, but I should mention...

** I don't know the age of your fridge, but most of the manufacturers of fridges have 5 to 10 years sealed system warranty which would include the compressor but not the electrical starting devices i.e., the overload & relay. Check your owners manual, it is the ultimate authority on warranty no matter what anyone else tells you according to your manufacturer.**

The info I have is a generalization from Heartland...

Limited Warranty - Major Refrigeration ComponentsSecond Through Fifth Year - After the first year from the original date of purchase, through the fifth year , the manufacturer will repair or replace, at its option, free of charge for parts and labor only, any part of the sealed refrigera-tion system (consisting of the compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier and connecting tubing) and the cabinet liner (exclusive of the door liner) which fail in normal home use. All other costs, including mileage, transportation, trip charge and diagnostic charge, if required, shall be the responsibility of the owner.

Aside from that, If you have a multi- meter you can check the compressor to see if the windings are ok.

**First, Unplug the fridge**

Remove the panel at the back down at the bottom. This should gain you access to the compressor.
On the side of the compressor will be the start relay/overload assembly such as this image...it may be enclosed in a black plastic cover as well.

My Heartland 36

Pull off the relay & overload and you'll see 3 pins in the form of a triangle...

ffd3e9e.jpg
With a meter measure between any 2 pins at one time, going between each pin with one remaining on a "common" pin.

You'll want 3 measurement's, similar to this example- 6ohms, 3ohms, and 9ohms.

On some meters you may simply get a reading of "0" ohms, as long as the needle moves off of "infinity" which would indicate an "open" winding = not good !

If following that, the readings are good, purchase a hard start kit. Part # HS410 also known as a 3in1 starter kit.

The above package contains info and hardware on how to connect it.

**NOTE : the HS410 ( 3 in 1 ) should be considered just a temporary "fix" as opposed to an actual "repair" in should not be relied on for long term reliability or safety, but rather thefactory replacemnet, double check with your model number**

Hope that help`s move you forward if nothing else. If so please take a second and rate the guidance and a testimony to your inquiry you received here at FixYa, either or all is appreciated.

Let me know how it goes and Good luck.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

My refrigerator is 15 years old. it has a top freezer. has been a good refrigerator until a few weeks ago. the motor is a lot noisier and the area around the freezer door ( top and sides) is really...

The compressor may be short cycling due to a condenser fan stopping while the compressor is running. The heat you feel is coming from the hot gas cycling through what is called a yoder loop. The yoder loop is there to prevent moisture buildup around the door seal. When this area becomes hot it means that something is wrong with the cooling fan below the refrigerator and cleaning the area may help. Please be aware that the fan may appear to be running normally but keep an eye out after cleaning because a bad fan does not always stop all the way and I have made up to three trips before catching one that has stopped. Always unplug the power before attempting to reach inside the compressor area. Feel compressor top to see if warm, hot or too hot to keep hand on top. Again this problem can be the condenser fan, dirty condenser restricting air flow or the start components of the compressor are worn out or all of the above. Fixing this now may extend your refrigerators life another 10 years. If you have any questions I will be here to assist you, Thanks, Sea Breeze

The freezer stopped cooling in the last couple days and the refrigerator stopped cooling today. It seems to still be 'running' as I can feel the fan blowing when I open the freezer, but nothing is...

In this case it sounds like the compressor is not working. Your model also has a motherboard that has a relay that tells the compressor to start and stop when thermostat call for colder temperatures. To some this is a complex refrigerator. To me they are easy to diagnose and repair. The most important thing to remember about this series of GE refrigerator is not to treat the symptoms only but find the cause. If you unplug and move away from the wall I want you to remove the cover over the compressor area and feel the top of the compressor. If the top of compressor is too hot to hold hand there then leave unplugged to prevent damage to the internal overload inside compressor. We need to test voltage going to compressor while compressor is disconnected from motherboard. We need to insure both fans are working without stopping. I will send you a Service Manual and Technical Sheet link. You will need a test meter and follow along with me as I help you resolve this, I will return with that and my contact information. I don't think the service manual mentions the 22 cu. feet but it does they are all basicaly the same. Thanks, Sea Breeze

The freezer is hot on the outside

Make sure the evaporator coils on the back or underneath near the compressor are clean. If there is a fan near the coils make sure it's running.

Refridge quit cooling suddenly inboth freezer

That could be a broad range of possibilities. The defrost timer, adaptive defrost board, compressor start relay, compressor start capacitor or a mother board. Would you happen to have the model number so I can narrow down those possibilities? If you pull away from wall remove cover over the compressor and then unplug. Touch the compressor and let me know if cool, warm or too hot to touch. Thanks, Sea Breeze

If the coils were really dirty, the compressor is probably just overheated. Let it cool down overnight then try again. If it still won't stay running it needs serviced. Could be the start relay or internal overload/overheat sensor in the compressor. If the coils were really dirty and it was used like this for a long time, the compressor could be damaged. It is almost never worth replacing a compressor in a home refrigerator.

Samsung Fridge Freezer (Freezer on top)Model SR-52NXA wont cool

Depends a bit on whether the compressor really is running, or if it's just humming because it's got power on the run coil, but not on the start coil.

Have a careful listen to the compressor. If it's making the trilling or gurgling sounds that go with a working compressor, then your problem is probably one of lost gas. Fixing this is not a do-it-yourself job.

If the compressor sounds like it's stalled, the problem may lie with the starter. Replacements are usually cheap enough for it to be worth fitting a new one just to see if it works.
