Did you follow the driver installation correctly? Some installs want the cable disconnected while the drivers are installed, others want the cable connected , while others want you to connect the cable during the driver install. you also may need a more recent driver for your operating system.

For Sony, use the i.link interface but the computer will also need same interface, otherwise revert to XP.

SOURCE: can not connect mini dv camcorder to sony vaio laptop

there are many post on various sites that state the same as you ihave the same prob with a sony which i paid £999,00 for and it wont connect i have been researching this problem for months on and of and cannot get any further, what may help you is some information that i have discovered , there are diffrent vers of firwire difrent baud rates this could be one reason for non detection ms sp1 has a diffrent ver to sp2 it is not easy to reinstall sp1 1394 as you need to diable cabbinet files to stop the reloading of the deleted sp2 speed 1394,ther are a few hotfixes avilable from ms on xp not suer about vista also if you plug a faster 1394 device into your machine it could diasble the slower ones , and now for the the killer any manufactur that incorporates 1394 in ther package has to purchase an extremly expensive license and microsoft are heavy into the development of usb stuf and are not concentrating on 1394 hence very little or no support, the only thing you could try is download virtual pc free from ms download site and install the op sys that pertains to the age of the cam good luck

I have a laptop with e sata port, How can I transfer vedios from my DCR HC 40 to laptop through esata port?

You can't use the eSATA port for this purpose.

The good news is that this is one of the few Sony mini-DV cameras that can transfer video through the USB port. Most such cameras have to use Firewire (what Sony call i.Link) for this.

There is a Sony tutorial page for downloading video to computer at THIS LINK

You will need to select Windows or Macintosh as the operating system, then Mini-DV as the camera type, then select the type of connection. As you will see, the USB option warns that it won't work with many cameras, and you are strongly recommended to use i.Link (which everyone else calls Firewire), however, the DCR-HC40 is on Sony's list of cameras that WILL transfer via USB.

Hi Heart of Chr....

Here is the USB driver for your Sony Handycam DCR-HC52e:

http://www.camerahacker.com/Forums/Video%20Camera/Sony/Sony_DCR-HC21_xp_driver_needed.files.hidden/USBDRVEN.EXE

The Firewire driver is already bundled with Windows XP.

Software for viewing, editing and transferring:
DCRHC52 is compatible with Windows Movie Maker & Apple iMovie, meaning you can usually begin editing your footage straight away usingthe software already installed on your PC.

Hope this helps :)
Season's Greetings!

Vidio

You need "Picture Package" software supplied with Sony camera to transfer video files in to PC. If you have software CD, please install it and connect your camrea with USB port.
If you dont have CD, check following Sony official weblink to download USB Driver, though it will not give you proper control on file transfer procedure yet it do help you to connect camera with PC.
