From your phone call the fax number. Watch the printer console. It should give a message that there is an incoming call. Also you should hear the fax noise on your phone. If none of the above happens, plug a phone into the wall jack that your fax is plugged into. Call the number from another phone, if the phone doesn't ring...you have the wrong phone number. If everything above works, you may need the fax card on the formatter replaced.

Cannot send or receive faxes

Use the HP Fax Test
The telephone number for this service is 1-888-HPFaxme (1-888-473-2963). The fax service receives faxes and returns faxes within 5 to 7 minutes to the number contained in the fax header. Solution two: Run a fax diagnostic test
  1. Load plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. Press the Setup button (c01669474.gif ) on the product control panel.
  3. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Tools , and then press OK .
  4. On the Tools menu, press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Run Fax Test , and then press OK . The fax diagnostic test prints.
Solution three: Check the telephone line and change the HP fax settings Step one: Test the telephone line
  1. Disconnect the telephone cord from the back of the HP fax product.
  2. Figure 1: Two-wire telephone cord c01501963.gif
  3. Pick up the handset of the telephone and check for a dial tone.
  4. On the single-line telephone, dial the fax number of the receiving fax machine.
    • If the receiving fax machine answers the call, continue with the next step.
  5. Hang up the single-line telephone.
  6. Use a second telephone line or a cellular telephone to call the telephone number assigned to the HP fax product.
Step two: Change the HP fax settings
  1. Connect phone line into line 1
  2. Press the Setup button (c01669474.gif ) on the product control panel.
  3. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Basic Fax Setup or Advanced Fax Setup , and then press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) again to change the menu option settings to the settings listed in the following table. Fax menu Fax menu option Setting Basic Fax Setup Rings to Answer 1 or 2 (At least one more ring than a telephone answering machine, if an answering machine is connected.) Advanced Fax Setup Answer Ring Pattern All Rings
  4. Use the HP Fax Test Service to try to send and receive a fax.
If the HP fax product still cannot send or receive a fax, continue to the next solution. Solution four: Check VoIP digital telephone line Using a VoIP telephone service can cause faxing to fail because fax transmissions are sensitive to the timing of the signals used to transmit the fax. If using a VoIP digital line is necessary, changing the Fax Speed Adjustment setting to Medium might improve the ability to send a fax over a VoIP telephone line. Use these steps to change the fax speed adjustment to a lower speed.
  1. Press the Setup button (c01669474.gif ) on the product control panel.
  2. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Advanced Fax Setup , and then press OK .
  3. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Fax Speed , and then press OK .
  4. Press the right arrow (c01669475.gif ) to select Medium , and then press OK .
  5. Use the HP Fax Test Service to try to send and receive a fax.

I CAN SEND FAXES BUT NOT RECIEVE

The majority of the time, when you can send but not receive, it is a phone line issue and not the machine. Extremely rare does a machine send and not receive. So here goes the things to try and the reason. 1, Make sure the phone jack is in the "Line" jack and not the external phone jack. Believe it or not, that is the number one issue with sending and not receiving.
Next, plug a phone into the jack that the fax machine is plugged into and see if there is static.
You want to be sure in the fax \settings and advanced settings that the ECM mode is ON, and that Junk Fax ius turned OFF, Junk Fax being on will stop almost all fax from comming in.
Now, the phone line. Here is the explaination of why that can be the problem. When you send a fax, you manually make the connection to the line. When you press send a relay flips and connectes you to the phone line, therefore you have made pretty much a mechanical connection enabling the phone line, and therefore you can send.
Now, when you have an incoming fax, several conditions must me met to make the handshake and therefore connect and receive. These all have to be right in order to properly receive. The phone line voltage mist be high enough, the phone line current must be correct and there can not be much decibel loss over the line. You are making a signal connection, all those conditions must be right to receive a fax. Think of it like a TV remote with batteries that are almost dead, It still send out some signal, but it will not change channels or change the volumn, etc etc. Same principle. If the signal to the incoming fax is weak, chances are it will not connect.

Can send but can't receive faxes.

if your fax is on a dedicated fax line, make sure your display says "fax only" or "auto". if not on a dedicated line, you'll have to give more info on what kind of hook up you have. in other words, is there an answering machine hooked inline, etc.

good luck,

Unable to send & receive the Fax

Try calling your fax machine with a cell phone to see if the fax answers. If not, check that the phone wire to the fax is plugged into the LINE socket, NOT THE PHONE SOCKET on the fax machine. Next, go to the MENU on the fax.You may have to check or change one or more of the following settings by trial-and error to fix the problem. BEFORE YOU CHANGE ANY SETTING, WRITE DOWN OR PRINT OUT THE ORIGINAL SETTINGS. In the MENU, find FAX SETTINGS, FAX SET-UP, or INITIAL SETUP settings. Try changing one or more of the following: PULSE/TONE, RECEIVE MODE, SEND MODE, RING DELAY, RING TIME, OVERSEAS MODE, etc.

Fax machine will send out but will not receive any

Cannot receive faxs

The majority of non receive issues are phone line problems.
3 conditions must exist for a fax to receive, the phone line voltage must be high enough, the phone line current must be high enough the the DB gain must be correct.
A fax receive should be viewed in the same way a remote controle works.
When you send a fax, you manually access the phone line when you select send, you connect to the phone line, normally via a relay. Once that physical connection is made, it can send anything. Maybe not well, but it will send.
Where as receiving is an electrical signal that activates the machine. If your phone line is not up to standard, its like haveing a remote control with weak or dead batteries and trying to turn on your TV with those weak batteries in it.
Issues, simply a bad phone cord between the machine and phone jack. Some resistance may have acrured over the years. The phone jack itself may have a poor connection.
A staticy phone line will cause a fax not to pick up. Plug a phone into that line and see if there is any noticible static.
Multiple devices plugged into the phone line with the fax machine. ETC an answering machine, credit card machine, etc can cause more of a draw on a shared line, if that is the situation, at least for a test, remove everything but the fax machine from the line and see if it receives then.
Rarely if the machine can send and not receive is the machine an issue.
Have your phone lines checked well and that sould resolve the issue. And make sure the line is not plugged into the extension or phone jack on the machine, but plugged into the line jack. That is also a common problem.

Can't receive fax but can send

Call your cell phone from the fax machine and check the caller ID to make sure that it is the correct number for your fax machine. Next, call the fax machine from you cell phone, and make sure the fax machine rings. Problems like these are almost always a phone line issue, not the machine.
