It can be the remote sensor, or the circuitry that works with it. I don't know its exact location for your model, but you can usualy find it, because at its location it looks like a little black or dark red window in front of it.

The sensor and its related circuitry are servicable. To find the exact fault will require using a DVM and an oscilloscope to trace down where the signal is stopping from the sensor. The sensor feeds the main uPC controler via a number of components on the circuit board. An experienced service tech should be able to troubleshoot this for you, and replace the defective parts. On rare occasions the fault can be with the uPC itself.

It is also possible that there is a cold solder connection on the circuit board that is stopping the remote sensor from getting the remote signals to the uPC.

Can I get to the input mode without the original remote?

If the TV ahs a "Menu" or "Setup" button on its front panel, you can select the input option by entering into its menu options. If there is no such button on its front panel, you must have a remote control to select its inputs.

I own a symphonic 27" television

I had this problem on a symphonic 27 inch TV I just bought from a friend who no longer had a remote. The thing with the menu and buttons on the front of the TV doesn't actually change the TV to true game mode. I don't know what it acutally does, but it isn't really in game mode. When it is in true "game mode" you can't change the channels until you turn game mode off. What I did was bought a universal remote (a specific one that someone told me about) for 8 bucks at walmart and I was then able to switch to game mode with the Input select on the remote. The remote I bought that actually worked is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Magnavox-PM435S-4-Device-Universal/dp/B00006686A/ref=acc_glance_ce_ai_-2_1_tit/002-3174824-8273629
Make sure you look at it before you buy it and make sure it has a button that specifically says "input" on it. I know that some of the universal remotes don't have an input select button or one that doesn't work. As long as you get a Philips-Magnavox that has that button, you should be ok. Much better solution that paying 30 bucks for a new remote specifically for the TV. Hope this helps.

Remote code

Codes for symphonic are one of the follows: 1026,1033,1038,1046,1155,1189
Hope this helps!
Most universal remotes also have a search mode. They work like this. Most want the TV turned off. Than press the button (TV) than press & hold the set button till the led comes on. Point the remote at the TV than press the volume + to increase. This will take you through the codes one digit at a time. Each time you press the + the remote moves up to the next code. This may take several minutest. Once the TV turns on press the set button again & the led will go out. That's it.
