Well it is an accumulator instead of a battery so just recharge it.
If the accumulatoris gone I think you have to use the garmin support

The Garmin GPS III and III plus use a tabbed lithium coin battery. Its is a Panasonic BR-2032. You can buy these for about $2 from larger electronic suppliers. The problem is that the shipping or minimum order will make that $2 battery cost you about $25. For you cheap guys there is a solution. You buy a CP-2032 and a coin holder. $2-3 for the battery and $1-$2 for the holder. 6 screws to open the case, cut the wires close to the battery as possible. Solder the wires to the coin holder (good idea to heat shrink or cover the solder joints), put in the new battery and you are done the easy bit. You will most likely have to trim away some of the plastic on the holder such as legs or other things sticking out. Unfortunately you can't really do this with out fitting it in the case and you don't want to do that until you have the holder on the wires so it will be in the right place. Once you get that, simply play with it until you can put the screws back in. And tighten gently. Not too much or the gasket will be squeezed too far out. Put tAA'sx AA's back in, take it outside so it has an unobstructed view of the sky, set it down and go for a long coffee or three. It will now download the almanac and any other data which can take 15 minutes or more depending on the satellites. You should see a low battery error and other errors such as saved data lost. Ignore these. You can put it on a external power plug or just leave it off with the AA's and in 5-7 days it will have reset the error as it figures it it now charged. You get the battery error even with a new fresh charged battery. I think there is a Garmin reset code to force this but none of the codes I have tried have worked.

You can find the battery here:

To open the case, scrape the sealant in the grove around the unit; then use a flat screwdriver, as wide as possible, that fits in the grove. Place the screwdriver on all sides and different places. Rotate the screwdriver gently until the glue tears and both gps housings can be separated.
To replace the battery you will need to be handy in soldering in tight spaces.

More than likely when you reinstalled the gps receiver (the board with the wires connected to it) at the top of the receiver you did not position it properly. If it is not positioned properly it will not receive a satellite signal
