Yes, the manual is available from Brother. See http://www.brother-usa.com/manuals/default.aspx?ProductID=mfc8480dn&ProductGroupID=5 and then look at the results for all of the manuals. The direct link to the User's Guide is http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users%20Manual/UM_MFC_8480DN_8680DN_8690DW_8890DW_EN_4865.PDF .

A drum error could mean that the corona wire on the drum needs cleaning or that the drum unit needs to be replaced. Make sure that the unit has cooled down before doing any maintanence on the drum unit. To clean the corona wire, turn off the machine and unplug all of the cables from the printer (telephone cord first, power last). Then open the front cover and pull out the drum and toner unit. Move the blue tab back and forth (right to left and left to right) several times. Leave the tab in the home position (aligning the triangle on the tab with that on the unit) when done. Then reinstall the drum and toner unit. Close the cover and reconnect the cables before turning the unit back on.

If you need to replace the drum unit, order DR-20. For changing the drum follow the above steps through removing the drum and toner unit. Then remove the toner from the drum (make sure not to spill the toner) by pushing down on the blue lever. Then put the toner cartridge into the new drum (the blue lever should lift into place and you should hear the cartridge snap into place). To reset the drum counter, do not close the front cover. Leave it open then connect the cables and turn on the unit. Press Clear/Back and then press 1. Close the cover when you see Accepted.

I hope this helps.

I HAVE REPLACED TONER WITH THE CORRECT BROTHER TONER CARRTRIDGE AND THE MACHINE KEEPS TELLING ME TONER ERROR AND REINSTALL DRUM UNIT..HELP

Hi there,

Below are instructions that I have found from the internet. Hope that they will help.

  • Open the front cover of the printer.
  • Hold down the Go button for 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. Then release the Go button
  • Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
  • Replace the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the printer.
  • Close the front cover of the printer
  • Your drum unit should now be reset
  • MFC / DCP PRINTER SERIES

1.Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge. Wait 1 or 2 minutes.
2.Replace the drum unit and toner cartridge into printer.
3.The error message "Change Drum Soon/Drum end soon" will continue to appear if the drum counter was not reset when you replace the drum unit.
4.To clear this error message, you need to reset the drum counter as instructed below.
5.Make sure that the machine is turned on.

For MFC users: To confirm you are installing a new drum, press 1. For DCP users To confirm you are installing a new drum, press the Up Arrow key

7.When the LCD shows Accepted, close the front cover.
    8.Your drum is now reset.

Resetting the drum unit will not improve print quality. It only resets your drum and allows you to continue to print. You decide when to replace the drum unit not the manufacturer!

Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

I have a Brother MFC-9840 that comes up with Print Unable 21. I have cleaned as set out in maintenance to no avail. Please help. Thank-you

The MFC-9840 manual says that this code is reporting a mechanical error.
Try to reset your machine in maintenance mode:
menu * 2 8 6 4 (within 2 seconds)
91 and then 99 to exit service mode.

User manual:
http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users%20Manual/UM_MFC_9840CDW_EN_2378.PDF

Brother's suggestion:

Turn off the machine's power switch and then

turn it on again. If the error message continues

leave the machine for several minutes and then
try to print, copy or scan again

Good luck.....

You likely have lost the internal memory data. This can be due to a power surge or that the internal battery has been depleted. The battery may need to be replaced.

You should reset the unit and reload the data, The manual is available online. Search Google for it.

The manual STRESSES the importance of backing up the data.

If you don'thave the backup, you MAY need to find another SR-16 owner to clone the data from.
