Yes it depend on how much damage is on the system. What you need to do is to identify the transistor model and look for replacement parts.

Generally thats a sign of a shorted output device, either a bipolar transistor or mosfet. Also ground faults can trigger a protect light.

Trying to find the right FET to replace burnt up ones with

hafler use international rectifier hexfets. there is alot of confusion what constitutes a mosfet amplifier.
if the outputs are mosfets instead of bipolar transistors, it is a mosfet amp.
some designs are using mosfets to drive the switch mode power supply, but use bipolar output transistors.that is not a true mosfet amp.
you need to go to an electronic supplier for the repair industry.
or the manufacturers warranty depot, who will be able to order them.mosfets are very high current devices, you have to ask ...why did they fail. if they are the switch mode drivers, there is bad capacitors in that circuit

Aplifier Not Working

Sounds like there is a shorted output transistor or two in your amp. Unless you have a DMM that can measure transistor junctions, you probably can't fix this yourself.

On the following page, go to the section labeled 'Checking Bipolar Transistors'. Under the two images, you will find a link to a form that will allow you to enter all of the values with the various lead configurations. Follow the instructions and send me the zipped file with the images. There's a link for my email address. Testing results are more definitive when the transistors are out of the board but initial testing in the board is reasonably reliable.

Pioneer m-770 will not turn on

you probably have a short in the circuit some where. you need to replace the transistor and look at all the solder joints to make sure there not damaged or cracked. i have the same amplifier and i replaced the fuse several times and it blew every time up until the last time when the 4 of the power output transistors blew. what ever you do do not try and power it on till you do all the things i told you or you will have sparks and fire. my mistake cost me my amplifier. but might help you get yours repaired

The original output transistors (SSP45N20A - if I'm not mistaken) for this amplifier are very difficult to find and there are virtually no substitutes that will work without extensive modification. Many techs try to use the SSP45N20B but they don't work reliably.

If you do find replacements, expect to pay $15 or more each. It's possible that there are other problems also. For example, the over-current protection may not be working properly. When it's working properly, it will generally trip when the output transistors fail (which prevents damage to the subs).

This is an old design. The newer amps will be more reliable and will generally offer better protection for the speakers.
