NAD spare parts

Hi I think the volume pot on my amp is faulty (lots of crackle when I turn it up or down, but not always in the same spot on the pot or all the time, prehaps it's something else??)

Where can I get a spare one?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sometimes this soret of problem can be caused by a leaky coupling capacitor between stages. Check for a varying DC offset on the wiper pin of the vol control. A scope is best for seeing this, but a multimeter may also show you the problem, just compare one channel to the other to determine if there is actually a problem or not. Before replacement, try flooding the internals of the pot with CRC2-26 first. You can often resolve these issues in this manner. If it is a hermetically sealed type(ALPS), you may have to drill a small hole(I use a pin vice and a 1mm drill bit) to get access to the internals. Is always worth a try before replacement is done, and I have only had to actually replace a few Vol controls over the years as most are recoverable. Hope this helps. Any dramas dont hesitate to get back to me. A FixYa rating is a good reward for this tip to repair the unit. Cheers

Robotek

Hi again Steve, just checking to see why you gave me a thanks for trying rating. I have a wealth of experience in repairing amps of all kinds. Can I answer any questions you may have is do you just wish to get a vol control.

Best approach to spares always is to go to the distributor for NAD in your country. If you let me know the exact model of the Unit, and where you are in the world, I can follow up for you with part numbers and so on to get your spare part. I strongly suggest you follow the cleaning/relube procedure suggested in my first post. A fixya rating is a great reward for my time to offer you advice. Cheers mate.

Hi again steve, still waiting for any info back on that model number. I have a box of spares left over from when I was a NAD service agent. May even have the part you require.

I am having a problem with the k1 one of the channels crackles a lot when i turn it up and does not always go on. i have to push on the nob to get to come on and does not always stay on a lot of crackling...

Hi, You have in days gone by what were called dirty pots ( short for potentiometers or variable resistor ) that's the name of the actual component for the volume control. It is a pretty easy repair actually, it just involves taking the cover off the stereo ( always do this with the unit unplugged ) then you will see where the volume knob enters the case-there will be a metal round device connected to it, that is your volume control ( pot ) There could be more than one, in a stacked configuration, so when you find that-use some " electronic contact cleaner " CRC is a popular brand-or even WD-40 will work ( although it may unduly attract dust in the future ) spray into the gap nearest where the wires are soldered to it-then quickly turn knob all the way up then down several times to be sure to push any un-washed away debri to the ends of the volume range. That will do it I'm 99.9 percent sure, thank you for asking FixYa, write back and let me know how the Crown sounds then. Good luck Prodzilla

I have a old NAD 1300 pre amp. I need to replace the volume rheostat where can i buy the part?

Hi, for the price of servisol you may as well buy a brand new pot. The nad uses a dual carbon pot. Any electronics shop should have one.
Is it a pcb mounted type or one with loot solder tags?
A couple of quid, but if you want to upgrade, then spend around a tenner and get an alps conductive plastic pot.
Try this:-

OR:-

Have a look on ebay, there should be loads.

Just found this mod.

NAD 3020a crackle in right channel regardless of volume.

more than likely you have a bad transisitor on that side and the frequincey is distorted there's not much you can do except take it back if it's new or take it apart and check for the bad part but if you do that you had better know what your doing!! it may be just 12 volts but thru an amp it's a nasty shock

Technics su-v560 stereo amp crackling

That is a common symptom of not properly grounding of negative side of the output of power amplifier section.Just resolder all component parts joint in power amp.sectiton and double the solder all negative ground.Also clean the pots of all volume controls and selector with a lighter fluid or desame that fluid so whatever sound or crackling noise eliminated and works normal again.. Hope it may help you;;

My Stereo integrated hi fi amp is giving a crackle when output from certain devices - like a build up of static at intervals. It is quite old NAD amp - is this a sign of transistor failure, is it worth...

This sounds like you may have a lot of solder connections on the amp board and the power supply board to be resoldered. After a few years of using the unit they can get heat stressed and develop cracks in them. The sooner you get this fixed the better. NAD is a very good brand of stereo and in most cases they are well worth getting fixed. If the stereo is used for too long it can develope some component break downs that would cost much more money to repair.

Sometimes the static or crackle sound is just the volume control or other controls like the balance or teble or bass controls that just need to be cleaned with the proper type of electronic contact cleaner.

I hope this helps, have a nice holiday season,

Dave

NAD spare parts

Hi....sounds like dirt or pitting on the carbon tracks in the pot.

The cheap solution is to USE it....often the carbon /graphite tracks will re-whet when rubbed by the wiper in the pot and hey it's ok until next year ....BUT............I mean do this....

Turn off the power and rotate the volume knob appx 100-200 times back and forth...........power up and check.
Use low continuous frequencies (synth music?) if possible as the lower the frequency is, the nearer it is to dc. and really exposes these faults easily.

Or spray WD40 (fix all graphite spray) into the pot while rotating.

OR get a genuine spare....off the..net I guess

OR get an equivalent from your LHS BTw............it is a good amp..........had one myself.......IT shook the Hi-Fi world by its' simplicity price and zero BS""t..........I knew the designer thru Dolby London where i was working ..top man.

Cheers

Crackling power switch on NAD 3220PE

Hi, i would try flooding trhe switch with CRC 2-26 for a start. Itr may recover some contact integrity. A jerry rig solution would be to bridge the switch contacts and leave it on all the time(i leave my amps running all the time) or if as in Australia you have a switch on the wall socket use that,

OR purchase a new switch from here. Not sure how you would go through NAD, probably dont have any in stock as a spare these days.

or if that does not work out, I could get one to you through ebay. Used to be quite a common TV switch, but I also remember replacing then in Nad amps, many moons ago ;) I think I still have a one in stock myself, packed away from when I was a NAD service agent:)

Gain on one channel stuck at max

Hi there

Check for a dry solder joint on one end of the vol control(earthy end). This will be causing your problem. The pot itself may actually be faulty to. You can always get stuff like that, just got to identify it. Check soldering to the pot first.

best regards
Graeme
