I own a Pioneer receiver, model VSX-516-K. Currently I get no sound from the center channel. This occurs no matter what type of sound option I choose on the stereo. (ex. Dolby Surround, Stereo, Movie, Sports or etc.) So right now we just always use the 7 speaker sound option, so we can still hear everything we're missing from the center speaker.
I have unplugged and plugged the center speaker wires many times and verified that the wires are properly connected.
And I have tried other speakers that I know work for sure and wired them to the center channel with the same result of no sound from the center channel.
Also once in a great while the center speaker will decide to work. However this hasn't happened now for a few months.
Any ideas what might be causing a center speaker failure inside of the receiver?

Having a live-and-kicking VSX-36TX receiver which I love, I feel for you. But the prices have come down dramatically since we bought them. I paid $1200 for mine new. If I needed to replace it I would go with a used one from eBay and consider searching specifically for one that uses the same remote but doesn't have one included. The price would be low.
Be sure the sound source has a center channel output ie. not a 2 channel source only, try the test tone setup for 5 or 6 channel balance, if no sound from the center channel still then it is looking like maybe the center channel is blown.
Yes. It is 5.1 surround. There are 2 front channels, 1 center channel, and 2 rear channels which comprise the "5" in 5.1 surround. The pre-amp output channel for a sub is the ".5".
Its not working correctly I have a few different types of center channels and they all have equal sound no matter how many speakers are in them. Connection in speaker box is bad or you may have a blown speaker
Hello, You may want to buy the service manual (SM) from Pioneer for this unit. It has a lot of info on resetting and testing the receiver under the "Test Mode". It is highly improbable that you could ruin the firmware by connecting the receiver in an unusual way. You may just need to reset it to factory specs. Another option if you bought it from a local Pioneer dealer is for them to reset. It usually involves getting into the secret menu to do so. I had one of these for a short while and they are quite nice receiver.
Good luck
Just to rule out the easy solutions, have you made sure no settings changed? Make sure that you didn't accidentally turn off any surround sound settings or turn off the center channel in the MCACC setup or the like (I have the VSX-D814, so your receiver should have MCACC as well). If you're sure no settings changed and the center channel should be working according to the receiver, then it would appear that the center channel amp went out in the receiver. You can either get a Pioneer service center to take a look at it, or if you're comfortable with electronics, I believe you can get the parts straight from Pioneer.
