Question about Rockford Fosgate Punch 500a2 Car Audio Amplifier

1 Answer

My Rockford 500 A2 amplifier shuts off after playing music for a while and then after a little bit turns back on by itself. The power light goes out on the amplifier when this happens and when I touch the amplifier it is really hot. My lights in my vehicle dont dim or anything so I dont think that its shutting off due to not being able to recieve enough power. How should I go about fixing this problem? Any help that you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Make sure the amp is well ventilated, it needs to cool down or else it will shut itself off, then when it has cooled off enough it will turn on again. Also, check your wires especially your power wires. Make sure that they are the correct gauge. If everything looks ok then there may be a fault in the amp.

Rockford fosgate 800 a2 amp power?

Hello desperate2le,

Watts delivered is a function of the voltage times the current. If the amp was 100 percent efficient, it would need 33 amps at 12V for 400 watts. At 14.4V, it would only need 28 amps. Of course, amplifiers are NOT 100 percent efficient, only about 50-60 percent in many cases, but somewhat higher for monoblocks, maybe 80-90 percent. So you're looking at a fuse in the 60-80A range. In the absense of a specific fuse size from the manufacturer, I'd start the primary fuse at a 60A and if the amp blows it on power up/immediately/frequently, move up to an 80A.

All of the Rockford-Fosgate 2-channel bridgeables I've ever seen show using the left positive (+) and the right negative (-) for bridging. But if it's not shown right on the amp, I'd call or email RF for the correct connection. The new amps do show it.

Hope this helps.

Problem with the bass controller.

Sounds a lot like you don't have it Grounded Enough. Did you run a Ground all the way to the Battery?

My amp only powers the subwoofer when the radio is on but wont when the cd player is on

The person(s) who hooked up your system made a boo boo. They wired your remote turn on lead to the power antenna lead instead of the amp turn on line (both are blue and easy to mix up). Thus when your radio is on it sends a signal to the amp and the amp turns on, but when you set to CD the signal goes away and your amp shuts down. Easy fix, just re-wire the amp turn on lead and the problem will be fixed.

Something Wrong With my Fosgate 500-a2 Amp

Is the amp being fed directly from the head unit's RCA preamp outputs or is it being fed by another amp's preamp outputs? Try temporarily wiring up a speaker you know is good in place of the sub and see if anything changes.

Rockford Fosgate Punch 360.2

If the wires were touching then the amp overworked itself into a early grave..What happends when they touch is the amp goes from seeing a 4 ohm load to seeing a 0 ohm load. You can imagine why this would be bad for a amp...usually the amp should shut off to protect from damage and I would assume that Rockford would. Right now im having a similar problem..I suggest your call rockford and ask to talk to a technical advisor ( the name escapes me) and ask him what he thinks.
