Question about Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Notebook

My little sisters dell inspiron mini just got the Unmountable boot volume message. I've looked online but most of the options require a cd which is of course not helpful when the mini doesn't have a cd drive. I have no idea the correct course of action to fix it that doesnt involve spending a lot of money.

The best option is, look around for external cd-rom with usb connection, and reformat the laptop.You need to go into the bios and change the boot order to make your usb cd-rom to first in the boot list. Once the usb cd-rom is plugged into used port, with operation system cd in it, on your laptop..press F2..go into the bios, to the boot order make your usb cd-rom on top boot list,,then save changes to exit the bios. Once again the system reboots..with message PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD ROM.. so just simple steps to follow..its not going to be expensive..good luck

get a copy of hirens and run HDD regenerator I think you have some bad sectors and a corrupted windows.

When your PC starts you have a message like "Hit DEL KEY to BIOS"
if you press that key, a menu appears. Look for a Menu like "boot menu"
Them you have to change option fisrt start, to external devide or CDROM.

If you are seeing 'unmountable boot volume' when booting your laptop / notebook, then this would suggest that the internal disk drive has become corrupted or perhaps has failed. I would recommend downloading a copy of Hiren's Boot CD from http://www.hirensbootcd.org/ - this is a CD image file (.ISO) and needs to be burnt on to a blank CD disc.Boot from Hiren's CD and select DOS programs which will give you access to a selection of Disk tools including HDAT2 which can be used to test and repair bad sectors on the internal disk drive. There are also utilities which can read the SMART data from the drive and give an indication of any problems it may have encountered.

The disk-drive cannot be "mounted", i.e., the motherboard cannot access it

that program "pulls-up-by-the-boot-straps", to read the rest of Windows from the disk-drive.


If the disk-drive has "failed", then you'll get messages like the one that you reported.

Replace the disk-drive.

My acer aspire goes to the bsod and says unmountable boot device.I've tried to restore windows 7 but it freezes and so does safe mode. I have ubuntu installed and I can access files on the harddrive....
The cause is a corrupted boot.ini or bad harddrive. Try running chkdsk from the command console. Check the links below for more info on how to do this:

How to remove the unmountable boot volume 1525 dell inspirion be cuz i have the blue screen, try go to the safe mode but freeze after it shows all the hard drive data its a stand still
if you can boot normally i suggest going to filehippo.com or cnet and download a free disk partioner and it will remove the boot volume for you. under run, msconfig, there is a boot option select the boot mount you want that may fix it let me know

I have an inspiron mini 10 which displays the 'umountable boot volume' message on initial start up. I have searched other sites but all seem to mention CD start up options which the netbook does not have...
It can be a possible hardware issue or a software issue

Dell Inspiron Netbook UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT PROBLEM
An UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME is a failure to read the operating system. You will need to boot to an XP CD via external Optical Drive and run CHKDSK /R to try to the resolve the error.

It is possible that the HDD or Solid State Drive (SSD) is failing and will need replacement.
