More than likely it has jumped off the recoil spring, but it may have broken the spring. More investigation is required, best get your tools out. :)

SOURCE: Pull cord on weedeater wont recoil

hi wade come across this all the time m8 the spring is slipping or the pawl (little plastic part on the recoil drum) is worn open the recoil and take a look at where the spring is sitting in relation to the center shaft where the bolt goes through the rope spool either the bend in the spring slack or the spring catch in the center is not catching properly this means when the spring is under load it will slip when u try to pull the cord. you can either get a new spring or try and re bend the spring which only works if u can bend it without breaking the spring which happens more times than not. on the first pull of the recoil pull the cord till u can fell the engine giving resistance let the cord recoil and then pull this allows the shortest pull to start the engine, saving the recoil uncoiling if it is still not catching try the pawl a small white plastic part in the top of the rope spool if this wears out it can give the same problem but it should still recoil for u hope this helps

Pull cord on gas trimmer recoils but doesn't engage motor

pull the recoil section of the motor and there will be a small plastic tag that engages inside the pulley
they have a habit of breaking away cost around $6.00 aud and are the same for all trimmer motors.

The pull rope on my Bolens BL-160 string trimmer will not recoil. How can I fix it?

Recoil spring is broken or bent and is out of its slot. The kicker is most of the newer discount store models are being made where they are difficult to repair. This one has a starlock washer holding the assembly together. Unless you are VERY mechanically minded, you will need to by the case and recoil assembly together. It costs about 50% of the cost of the whole thing.

I have a Ryobi 700R trimmer - I need to know how to replace the pull cord - Tom

If your pull cord is still attached to the grab handle, it's likely your spring is still wound. Follow this if this is the case:
1. Disconnect the shaft by removing the small set screw and the clamp - pull the shaft out of the engine body.
2. Remove the recoil assembly (About 5-5 torx bolts).
3. Pull the cord until the stops and use a small piece of wood acting as a wedge to jam between the recoil and the housing.
4. Cut the line and pull the knotted terminating end from the hosing.
5. Keep the wedge tight so it does not spin back. If this happens, you will simply need to rewind the spring back (about five turns) and re-wedge it.

Use proper line and reverse for new line. Good luck!

The pull cord on my poulan pro weedeater will not

You have a broken recoil spring. Dis-assemble (pull-off) the recoil housing and check for proper dog alingnment, broken spring, or something jammed between recoil sprocket and engine block.

Howdo I fit a new pull start cord on a ryobi 25cc

remove the plastic housing to gain access to the recoil. Pull the cord slowly all the way out, this will cause the spring to wind up.Clamp the recoil wheel so it will not return to its original position,be carefull the recoil has tension on it not remove the old pull rope and thread the new one in and thru the hole of the recoil tie knot.pull on the cord to take tension off and at the same time remove clamp. Slowly allow the recoil to wind the rope in and reinstall on unit.

Craftsman 17" 25cc Trimmer...pull cord stuck

it's doubtful that bad gas caused this, it sounds like the cord was back-lashed and partially came off the recoil pulley. Remove the recoil cover and ensure the cord is all on the pulley, make sure the rewind mechanism works smoothly before re-installing.
