I have a Thomson TG582n router - connected it OK to my iMac through a ethernet cable but when I try to connect my macbook to the wifi it fails. Used set up assistant and it still won't connect - just says unable to establish a connection.

try uninstall the Time Capsule and then try.

I guess that the router had specs from the zone you buy it.So now you are in other zone and dont had the specs for that zone.

Turn off your security because 10.5 with wifi doesn't play nice with router passwords.

have you got two dhcp servers running ?
turn off dhcp server in wireless router
and use the one in the Thomson TWG850-4 Residential Voice Gateway.
make sure ip address in wireless router is different to the Thomson TWG850-4 Residential Voice Gateway. make it one higher on last digit of ip address
make sure dhcp does not lease out this ip address.

Try to reset and test again

Run an Ethernet cable from the iMac to the router.

That is a older wifi access point and maybe the N is not compatible for your imac. I would get a dual band 2.4/5Mhz wifi Access Point.

First off you modem there is not wifi but cant be hooked up to a wifi router that you can purchase from any computer store.

The modem would hook up to the router directly instead of hooking to the computer via RJ45 "ethernet cable"

The wifi router would then share that connection. You would need to set that up with some security I recommend WPA 2 encryption you will need to select a password/ or pass phrase.

In order for me to give you the How To's we would need some more information such as:

1. Brand name of router
2. Model number

Then you have your settings wrong, as I have the same setup for many years. The setup page of your router should be set basically default, it should be all set to auto ip and other than your dns there should not be anything else to set. I have 3 wireless and two wired devices and all of the computers .And the speed is constant,,something is wrong with your settings, if you can take a screenshot by opening the router homepage and hitting the print screen button on your keyboard, you can then hit paste on here and it will past the entire thing on here to examine
