My HP 3800 color laser jet printer needs a new transfer unit. (it is "wrinkled" and has pockets . . . it is not smooth). Can it be replaced? where would I find the part number information/cost i would need to order it? HP only tells me about cartridges

that printer is really not designed to print on those envelopes but the wrinkling is usually caused by to much moisture in the envelope or paper stock. When the printer heats the print stock to bond the toner to the paper in the fuser unit the moisture evaporates and causes the paper to wrinkle. Don't know of a fix for it other than use different print stock.
On alot of printers when you print envelopes theres a back door on the printer to prevent the curling or wrinkles. Just open the back door when doing envelopes.

You may need to replace FORMATTER BOARD & DC CONTROLER BOARD ASSY which are located behind the printer. Both BOARDs are side by side together. Just open the back cover, you will see it.

Use the following procedure to calibrate the printer whenever you replace the DC controller,
the formatter, the color misregistration sensor (PS12), the transfer unit, or the laser/scanner.
1. Press to enter the MENUS.
2. Press to highlight configure device.
3. Press to select configure device.
4. Press to highlight PRINT quality.
5. Press to select PRINT quality.
6. Press to highlight CALIBRATE NOW.
7. Press to select CALIBRATE NOW.
8. Wait for the printer to calibrate.
