What is the pressure reading on the filter pressure gauge with the pump off and then with the pump on? The water rushing back to your skimmer suggests the filter is clogged or a valve is broken and stuck closed somewhere.

I suspect you had air trapped in the filter. When the pump shut down, the compressed air in the filter pushed back, turned the pump backwards, and unscrewed the impeller off the motor shaft. This particular pump doesn't use an impeller screw which prevents this from happening. You will have to pull the pump apart to see if this is the cause. I have seen this happen many times.

Sta-rite mse-7 vertical jet well pump will not prime.

If your Sta-rite vertical mse-7 pump will not prime, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
  1. Check the water level: Make sure the water level in the pool or spa is high enough to reach the skimmer and the pump. Low water levels can cause the pump to lose prime.
  2. Check the skimmer basket: Make sure the skimmer basket is clean and free of debris. A clogged skimmer basket can restrict water flow and prevent the pump from priming.
  3. Check the pump lid O-ring: Make sure the pump lid O-ring is in good condition and properly seated. A damaged or misaligned O-ring can cause air leaks and prevent the pump from priming.
  4. Check the suction plumbing: Check the suction plumbing for leaks, cracks, or other damage. Any air leaks on the suction side of the pump can cause loss of prime.
  5. Check the impeller: If the impeller is damaged or clogged with debris, it can prevent the pump from priming. Remove the pump basket and inspect the impeller for damage or debris. Clean or replace the impeller as needed.
  6. Check the pump seal: If the pump seal is damaged, it can allow air to enter the pump and prevent priming. Inspect the pump seal for damage and replace it if necessary.
If none of these troubleshooting steps resolve the issue, you may need to call a professional pool service technician to diagnose and repair the problem.

My pool pump shut off because I think it overheated. I looked in the skimmer basket and there was a plastic bag in it that had blown in off the deck (dh had been installing lights today and didn't...

Your would be correct. Most pumps have a high limit switch that kills the power when the motor gets too hot. As long as you have shut the power off to the motor, wait until it is safe from the storm to go and try it again. They usually cool within 30 minutes. Check the pump basket first before turning it on. If it was running for a long time without water circulating, the heat may have distorted the basket and need to be replaced. If the pump turns on and primes up your off to the races. If not, you may need to replace the seals or the entire pump

Ok I assume the pump is running? Check the lid again to be sure the "O" ring gasket is in place. If it leaks, it will draw in air, and won't flow full flow. Also check the lid for cracks. If you have seperate valves on your skimmer and main drain, I ususally close the skimmer valve and open the main drain valve fully. Once the pump is pumping full, I usually open the skimer fully, and only open the main drain about 40%. Another tip would be to close these valves on the suction side when you clean the basket, and do it rather quickly, and you won't have as much trouble loosing your prime.

Water fills the pump basket area and empties once full

This could very well be low water, it should be half way up the tile or the skimmer throught. Also check your skimmer weir door. If it get's stuck in the up position it will do the same thing. To be sure start the pump then watch the water in the skimmer. If it sucks dry then it is one of these things.

Pump and skimmer instructions on how to

Direction of flow is FROM the skimmer to the pump and back to the jet. Its easy enough to determine which hose is the "jet" hose and which is the suction hose. Put both into the water, or in a bucket and turn on the pump, find the one that is shooting out water, that's the jet hose. On these systems, filter replacement and cleaning is annoyingly frequent if you want it to work even remotely efficient.

I have new pentair 1 hp pump that was intalled by

to open the basket the pump needs to be off. all drains and the skimmer needs to be shut. otherwise all the water from the pool will leak out... now when you have done all of that. there should be a ring around the lid you take a hold of that and twist. it can be alittle stiff at first.. When you get that ring off the lid will pop off. now water will come out of it becuase it's just what's in the pump and in the line. once the water is out you can take the basket out and clean it. Now very important. when you put the lid and the locking ring back on open the skimmer and the drains to get water back into the pump. If the pump is not filling up go ahead and automatically put water in there until it's full. once the pump is full you can turn back on the pump and everything should work fine. if you have any other questions please let me know.

My Kreepy Krauly is working at half speed, any ideas? I've checked the tubing, no visible leaks, flapper works. Seems to pull air into the filter even after tubing is full of water. Both baskets clean.

Are you using a skimmer plate with the regulator valve or is connected direct to wall? Do you have a valve near pump that allows you to select skimmer or main drain or other input port? If so, select only skimmer. What is the pressure on your filter? Filter may need to be backwashed.
