Algae will grow in standing water subjected to light. It does not need to be sunlight either.. fluorescent light works, too. Take away the light and algae will not grow.

If there is no light, this may not be algae - but something else. Try using a different water source or have the water tested.

Hello,

Using filter water of course helps keep things clean and so forth. To help solve this algae problem when you descale and clean machine use vinegar and that should help from algae building up. Thanks Mike

I was checking back with you to see if you have anymore questions. On another note that Might help, sense there is 3 out of 4 house holds have a coffee maker of some kind in there home, and keurig has sold units in the millions per year and most are on there counter in some kind of light, this algae would be a growing problem and tons of complaints would be coming in if you had your machine in the light. Another thing, that a lot of people don't know is the plastic is specially made with a type of tint in it to avoid certain light that would cause this. Kind of like cheep sunglasses. I learned that a few years ago, when I was at a convention, sense my wife and I also Own a espresso company in my home town for the last 16 years. So, again, this is what you can do, besides descaling with some vinegar , is a lot of people never empty there water container completely and clean it, they just keep adding water to it, from fear of it running out, so what happens is the bottom part of the water container is never cleaned and scrubbed. So, if you just clean container on a regular basis and descale regular complete with vinegar and water, and you should be alright. IF you have a water problem in your water system, which I doubt, then you would have this problem in your fridge ice maker as well, if you have one. I hope this additional information helps you. Mike

Distilled water doesn't let anything grow and won't build hard water scale in your machine. Coffee tastes way better too!

I descaled my unit after using doubly filtered water (refrigerator water filtered into a brita container filtered, then into my K machine). My algea build up was a perfect circle only over the LED circular light. I saw no settings option to turn OFF that light in the reservoir.

I got the green out of the reservoir itself, but I still have some inside the part at the bottom with the spring mechanism where the water flows out. I did a vinegar/water clean cycle yesterday. Is there anyway to clean inside of that or do I need to order another water reservoir?

I noticed and I don't know if this is the same for everyone else but the Algae seemed to grow where the 2 blue lights on the base were.

Algae growing in the bottom of our Keurig only after we started filling the container using the spray hose. Prior to that, no problem and we also use filtered water. We stopped using the hose for a time and problem disappeared until recently and I discovered my house mate started using the hose again also recently. So I'd be interested to know how you fill your Keurig also.

My system has always worked perfectly. This year the water is green. PLease help

The green is algae and you need to go to a pool place and get chemicals to bring it back to normal. You would be wise taking a sample of your green water with you so they can tell you what it is you need/.

Why does my water smell like mildew?

There may be algae contamination of the system. Disconnect the water supply and run in a mixture of 2 tsp of Baking Soda (bicarbonate of soda) in 1 cup of water through the line, from tap connector to dispenser. Leave the solution sitting in the lines for 1/2 hour prior to flushing with clean water and removing any ice made with the solution. Bicarbonate of soda is great for destroying cell walls of plants and fungi (algae, mold etc) and removing smells.

White vinegar is also hostile to algae, and doesn't leave a lingering smell, but bleach should be avoided, or used very sparingly, in systems used to supply water for consumption by people or pets.

Algae dust in pool

I think Brandon's answer deserves a little more time and a slight explanation... as I think it is Spot On!
Algae dust is usually "Already DEAD" algae!
And normally it is way to Small & Fine to be trapped by the filter.
We here on this forum do not know what type of filter you have, But if you do have a "MultiPort" valve as Brandon suggested you turn to the "Waste" mode, you will not use the filter mode to vacuum, as this will only BLOW the Fine Silt like substance right back into your pool, spreading out into the water to be suspended turning your water cloudy if not green, until it settles, and once again you have a covering of Dead Algae Dust on the floor of your pool. But when the filter valve is in Waste mode, you will bypass the filter and the return line altogether and your vacuumed algae silt will be sucked up into the valve, and OUT the valve to waste. And just like that all of the algae dust is vacuumed out and did not Blow back into your pool.
I just had a situation where we cleaned up such a pool where the customer couldn't get the algae out, we came out and vacuumed to waste. And I by chance took a picture of the partially vacuumed pool and Dust remaining.

algae-dust-in-pool-iwrnrkacomuoeuyhvucmvd0t-2-0.jpg If you don't have a multipart valve, then if the pool has no debris but only dust, then and ONLY then, should you use Backwash mode. You NEVER want to vacuum a pool with debris in Backwash mode! NEVER!!! Because the larger debris you are vacuuming will get caught in the internals of your lateral drain assembly or your DE Grids. then it will be very difficult to un clog them, which in turn will reduce proper water filtration efficiency! But the algae dust will be able to pass right on thru. If you have neither of these types of filters because you have a Cartridge style filer, the elements may be able to trap the dust, if it is still to fine to filter, you obtain an additional pool pump, place it pool side, and in the pump out the pump will be two vacuum hoses and away you go.

Good Luck

To much algae how do i get rid of our pump got unplugged while gone and now has to much algae growing what can we do?

shock the pool with as much as 2 gallons of liquid chlorine
Wait 12 hours and begin the hard part
With a pool brush work your way around the walls and floor
let settle for an hour or so and vacum
check chlorine if it went low do procces over
if it hasn't dropped leave that step out
in between vacuming clean out you cartridge filter as much as 3 times a day till you clear up

once clear start using a stabilizer to keep the chlorine level at it's optimal and use a non foaming algecide

Both chemicals are applied for your gallons of water Just follow the directions
The stabilizer works best if you put it in a nylon and float it off the ladder.
Every few hours you can sqeeze it till it all disolves

I would also suggest to clean the filter cartridge ever day especially in the hottest months

I have a 16x32 dished out pool; average depth 5.5ft

First of all to answer your question. Yes the intex generator will work with a 16x36
Where do you get an average of 5.5ft when you say the pool is 36" deep
Well now the bad news. A salt water system will not solve your algae problems
Algae comes from wrong pool maintainence
You must now with a green pool shock your pool with 1 gallon of chlorine and now with a pool brush brush the sides and bottom now wait 4 hours for things to settle.
now vaccum clean cartridge if applicable or back flush your sand filter
wait 24 hours and brush again.
Continue to do this until it starts to clear watch your chlorine level and if it starts to get low shock again until the green goes away.
You will also need to buy an algacide, non foaming and follow the directions usually 14-24 ounces per 10,000 gallons of water
also put a stabilizer in your pool to help maintain your chlorine level. It will still drop but not as fast
one of the main contributing factors to a green pool or lack of sanitizer ( chlorine ) is # of bathers, sun, heat, sun
tan oils, and even the most common problem Lack of use.
The water needs to be constantly moving to help prevent algae. If you do not use it for a few days or so then brush it even if you do not see algae Guarantee if you go in the pool a few days later after not using it for a bit you would feel the slipperyness HMMMMMM is that a word anyway you would feel it

Another thing to consider is to filter filter filter
unless you have a 4000 gl ph pump you can not get enough filtering with an intex pump.

a pool should be turned over at least 3 times a day this means if you have lets say a 5000gallon pool and a 2000 gl ph filter you will need to filter at least 7.5 hours and that is at the low end
An intex pump pulls about as much energy as a 40 watt light bulb I have aintex 2500gl ph pump with a 7000gl pool I run my filter 24/7

Bottom line is you do not need a salt system that is just one more so to speak chemical to maintain at a certain level

Stick with getting your chemicals right and your problems will go away if you have any more questions or something specific just e-mail me

My filter is returning green slime to the pool as fast as i vacumn it up.I can see it being pumped back in the pool. Why is my filter not working?

It could be that there is algae growing inside the tank of the filter. You may want to vacuum to waste to get the algae out of the pool and clean out the filter. If you have a Cartridge or DE filter, you will need to do an acid bath for the grids. Take the internal parts out of the filter and clean with bleach water, use bleach water on the tank also.

If you have a sand filter, you will need to empty out the sand, clean internal parts and tank with bleach water then fill with new sand.

Pump is running high keep shocking it, had algae, cleaned it out, back flushed several times, cannot figure out why it's still running high? (unsure of brand)

DE filter? If so then you need to give the filter an acid bath to purge the dead alge from the filter (Fingers, Grids or Discs). Go with 1part muriatic acid to 3 part water. Let soak overnight. The water should turn almost neon green.Rinse off and reassemble. SHould be Good to go. DE and Cartridge filters should be given an acid bath once a year.

Algae

If you are running water through at a great rate algae wont have time to grow.

Try cleaning it out with bleach to kill the exsisting algae.
Change your filter, this would contaminate it and you don't want to be spreading that in the air you breath,
Then adjust so that more humidity is needed. This way it should run through water faster and spend less time sitting with still water in it.

Good Luck.
