Recorded programmes from some channels break up- both the picture and sound- when replayed

I've got one. Does exactly the same thing. It usually happens within the first, say, 10 hours of recorded material. This is the most used part of the hard drive disc. We have 5-9 hours of programs we intend to keep so we end up re-recording over the next part of the disc repeatedly. This wears that part down. What I did was keep 2-3 hours of stuff in that zone and carried on recording and deleting as usual, as I still do. I'm watching it right now. But if I erase past the break 'zone', the recordings 'jump'. It has a big memory and shouldn't be a problem. So..........fill with programs to half the disc and record over the lesser used part of the disc.....it works for me. I'd be interested in hearing how you get on. Good luck Red.

I am unable to playback from the hard drive.

To confirm you really have programs there, record a new short clip and try to play it back.

Stop Substitles on a LG RHT497H 160G dvd recorder?

I have the LG DVD recorder DRT389H which has the same problem. You can't switch off the subtitles during timer recording from the Electronic Programme Guide. The only way I could stop this was to go to the main set-up menu then select the A icon. Select DTV Subtitle and choose a language that the TV programme isn't broadcast in. I chose Gaelic. The only disadvantage is that this stops any subtitles being recorded so you can't access them later.

Tape shows last 5seconds of previous clip before recording next clip

I'm not familiar with your particular model, but many cameras of this type have a "quick review" function that allows you to see what was recorded for the last few seconds to verify that all is well. This is critical in broadcast situations where you only get one shot to get the video. This is a quick way to verify that all is working without having a blank gap in the recording caused by an inaccurate rew/play/stop/rec sequence.

Check the manual for this "review" function.
