My Sony DSC-W230 turns on and lens keep opening and closing, and then it shows "turn power off and on again". how do i fix this ?

This sounds like a stuck lens. Here is a good blog about things to try to fix it:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
The blog is about a lens error, but when the camera lens opens and closes, there is often a problem with the lens.
Also make sure the battery is fully charged, and good. Also make sure the contacts are clean on the battery, and also inside the camera.
If all fails to get it working again, get an estimate on repair first, since the cost can justify just going ahead and buying a new camera.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

On my camera when i turn it on the lens keeps opening and closing and on my screen it says "turn off and on again" and when i do that the lens keeps opening and closing and it doesn't work. Can you help me...

This is the most common problem with dig cameras. The reason being that there are tiny gears inside the lens assembly, that operate it. When a tooth gets broken off, or some dirt, lint, sand, etc., gets in the lens assembly, a gear can get jammed. When this happens, the camera cannot "initialize" and be ready to take pictures. There is an excellent blog about this problem. It is listed under the lens error category, but it applies to all lens malfunctions, and the one you're having. Here it is:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
Try their suggestions. They say about 50% of the cameras can be fixed trying their free fixes. If nothing works for you, and you decide to have it repaired, get an estimate first. The cost of repair can easily exceed the cost of a new camera. Good luck, and hope this helps!

Camera lens keeps opening and closing and message says " turn the power off and on again".

I followed the other people's suggestions with the compressed air and shaking the camera. I also, turned the lens a little to the left and the camera works perfectly. Thanks, again for everyones help.

Lens Error

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Coolpix lens opens retracts opens then closes again and lens error appears

Hello

When you turn the camera on the lens comes out and has parameters when extending to focus, if the lens does not open fully it sees a problem and then closes.

there are tiny plastic gears inside and may have chipped or a piece of sand got in causing the lens to jamb. "very fragile"

one solution is to ask a camera repair shop how much a lens mechanism would be to replace. (if cost is more than 1/2 of what you paid dont bother)

another solution is to have someone sell your camera on an auction site for parts, to make some money towards another camera purchase

Lens Error, Restart

Hi

What you are seeing is a generic stuck lens error message, turning off the camera and turning it on again will not fix the lens unfortunately.

Your lens needs to be cleaned or repaired, and if it cant be repaired it needs to be replaced. There are online places that will do it for a decent price and there are others that overcharge by way too much.

Fixya rules prevent me from giving you a link to anything off Fixya that would help you fix your camera.

Good luck from....

Camera shuts off lens error

"lens error" will only be fixed by sending into repairs. 800-706-2534 and keep choosing option 2. Tell them you have a lens error and they will tell you where to send it.

Shutter will not close!

very small dust particals are the reason of this problem.I m suggesting an idea but apply it on your own risk.Keep camera in off position then slightly strick with ur fingernale around the lens ring evenly. This can make the lens shutter contrct.Once the shutter closed, clean gently with a painting brush over the edges where shutter slides from.do this for several times so that any hard dust partical causing may removed.do not insert anything inside.
