Our LG rear projection TV had the bulb replaced 12 mths ago and was working fine. Last night we heard a whurring sound then the colour went all funny. Now it won't come on but the whurring sound is still there.

The model of our LG is 52SZ85. Would this make a difference in your prognosis?

  • patricia_28944 Sep 11, 2011

Is it easy to replace? Where would be the best place to purchase this? Thanks

  • patricia_28944 Sep 11, 2011

OK sounds like we will need to have a qualified technician to repair/check for us. Do you think it is worth repairing? or should we just purchase new tv? appreciate your thoughts.....

I have had conflicting advice. Your technician advised a new ballast board is required. I have been told by a separate specialist that it is the colour wheel?

Hi,
I am sorry to hear regarding the trouble.
Be advised that as i do not have any luxury to diagnose your product, i would not be able to provide any legitimate 2nd opinion, however would be able to add few inputs to it.
If you hear loud noise that sounds like a playing card in a bike's spoke wheel is a bad color wheel, that's the problem you have the color wheels cost around 120.00 give or take and can be replaced by you if you pay close attention to taking apart the TV. Its location is in the engine and there are part store i have you can price them at and receive a schematic. I doubt regarding ballast board, though could be a possibility. Usually if ballast board is bad, the TV would be completely dead with only LED's blinking. I would go with the replacement of color wheel and if problem remains unresolved, then might consider ballast board.
Let me know,if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hello
The lamp ballast boar of your LG projection Tv is faulty. There is coils, which generate high voltage for the lamp to work. If any one turn of winding inside that inverter transformer gets shorted, it will apply a heavy load to the main power regulator board, and a "Hissing" sound will be prodced. Just replace the ballast board.

This is the picture of the lamp ballast board of your tV. Just look it for anu bulged capcitors. You can see the inverter transofrmer also, and near to it is an electrolytic capacitor. Just look it for any bulging on its top side. I hereby attaches an other picture too, not related with your tV, but for your information, about what a bulged capacitor will look like.

See the red arrow marked capacitors. They are bulged ones. You can see a good one at the top right part of the board with flat top surface. If the capacitor in the inverter board has damaged, the fault you indicates will occur. So check it before replacing the ballast board. OK.

Hello= You must have sufficiant knoledge in electroncis, and must ahve all tools to replace this board. First of all, you have to chech the reson for the faulure of present board. An experienced service technican can detect it vry easly. If the lamp has some trouble, it also will apply tremendous load to the ballast baord, and finally it will fail. It will be best to buy this ballast board from Authorised Service Center for LG at your town, because you can't detect the refurbished ballast board. You can get it from open market [electronic spar aprt selling shops]; but beware, and not to buy a refurbished one. OK.

Hello = The cost of a refurbished ballast board comes $220, here I can see. Just get it from authorised LG service center. It will be best for you. We can't trust on a refurbished board. I don't know where are you from now, and about the service charges there at your country. I'm now from South India. We will receive a service charge of [INR Rs500/=] here in India for this work. That will come around [500/45=$12 approximately.] Just consuct with your technician of at the authorised service center for LG at your town. OK.

One of the most common problems on this units, after the lamp, is the thermo-fuse. Its a little device that is install close to the lamp, it has a conector, usually black, with two wires; it should ck continuity. Ckeck that out. Good luck.

Have sound, no picture

After fooling around with all of the buttons, and disconnecting the power to the TV, it occured to me that it may be the Comcast digital cable box. I unplugged the cable box for a few minutes, plugged it back in and the TV works just fine!
