Happy to say that a ten minute call to Sony fixed my focus issue. They changed a setting and de-powered it.
Have you dropped the camera or has someone else done so? The lens assembly could be damaged. Try pointing the camera at something about three feet away whilst half pushing the shoot button then still holding the button half way point the camera at something a long way off. Can you hear the mechanism trying to focus and does the picture in the LCD change. If it's all quiet and the picture doesn't change then it could be a damaged focus motor or a connection to it is broken. So would a "Solution" be to "drop it again"?
This camera has TTl auto focus so it can't be switched to manual so that idea is quickly stomped on. A silly question, are you half pushing the shoot button down first to activate the auto focus. If you don't and just hit the shoot button you'll definitely get out of focus shots. Have you sat down and read the manual on how to correctly focus. A number of things can crop up which can fool the autofocus into a wrong setting. Have you dropped the camera or has someone else done so? The lens assembly could be damaged. A lot of people get caught with that one. You'll never shoot a focussed picture in macro unless it's less than a foot or so away. BMW
I did a reset (hold Menu button down for 5 sec.) and the camera is now fine. I don't know which setting was off, but it behaved in a non-sensical fashion (macro worked better at a distance than non-macro???). It was help through these pages that made me look for the total reset, so Thanks Very Much!

I came back form a vacation and most of the photos made with my SD500 are poorly focused. I have since had the E18 problem, which I fixed by lightly "helping" the lens back in whil it closed. Now the focus is completely off, visible in the LCD screen, and the re-focusing noises made by the lens don't sound good, from a mechanical point-of-view. It seems to be a bit better at full zoom, though that is not good either. This camera is now useless, and out of warranty, so I'm willing to get out my tools and take it apart, if this is a fixable issue. If not, would it be worth sending it to Canon? I have an Olympus and a Nikon, too, maybe I'm done with Canon.

I think I might have a damaged focus motor. It is not the macro button. And when I push the button it only makes a very quiet sound and the picture does not change.
the pictures come out blurred and out of focus.
My camera works fine when I'm taking a picture of a subject no more than two feet away. If I try to take a picture of a subject any further, it is completely out of focus.
My camera will not focus on any setting. When turning it on, the lens keeps going in and out to focus for about 5 seconds but never locks into a focus. The screen then displays "turn camera off and on again".
I have done all the test. It makes a noise and the lens is out of focus.
Camera will not focus, when I try to focus in shuts off.
There is not focus in this camera.
My camera doesn't focus, I dont know what to do.
I've had this camera exactly for 2 years. The problem started when it did not focus. The lens does not make a noise and the image on the screen is also blurry.I have gotten the on and off and lens going in and out but that seems to be fixed. But now it will not focus again. Is there anything I can do, or do I need to send out for repair.??
I have the same problem, I know how to use a camera.
it just doesn't focus on faraway objects unless I zoom in and even that only for a limited distance.
if the mechanism is damaged is there a way to fix it by taking it apart and jiggeling with something in there?
When I try to take a macro (close-up) shot, the camera focuses how I like it at first, then suddenly turns everything blurry. Is there a way to manually focus this camera or something?
Autofocus has stopped working on Ixus 750
