If you are seeing an ice sheet at the bottom of the freezer, your drain is blocked. When the unit goes into defrost, the moisture will fall into a drain that runs under the unit to a pan where it evaporates. If the drain becomes blocked, each time the unit defrosts, it adds a layer of ice. I have seen them several inches thick. Pull out the bottom bins in the freezer and look for some screws that hold the rear panel in place. Take them out and pull the panel out of the freezer section. At the bottom of all the ice you will find a small drain hole. It may take a hair dryer and/or some warm water to melt your way through, but get it all melted away (you will fill up the drain under the unit and it will start to overflow so have towels handy) and make sure water is running down the drain. When it is all cleared out, you should be ok, but check it again in about 12 hours and see if you have any buildup.

On your maytag refrigerator ,Take the back side off, which is located in the interior part of the freezer. When you get in there, there are coils, and under the coils is the drain that is supposibly clogged.Defrost that hole with hair dryer an warn water.Water should not be over hot, otherwise plastic parts will get melted.A basic Luke warm water.Unplug the refrigerator from power outlet, while doing this.---------

Once you take the panel off the back of the freezer cabin, you will see that there is a lot of ice both on and under the thin metal "funnel" to the drain. There will be some gunk in there too.You needed to slowly and carefully clear all that ice formed and dirt.------

Getting this drain hole cleaned will help. But if its again n again getting collected then its defrost problem. The defrost board needs to be replaced.-----------

You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Why is there a layer of ice on the floor of the bottom freezer of my refrigerator?

The water most likely is coming from a defrost drain blockage. Unplug and remove the rear panel inside the back wall of the freezer. See panel location #4 in the photo=> HERE
You will need to get that panel out of the way to see and clean out the defrost drain.

Ice keeps forming on the bottom of the freezer - like a leak on the back side flows into the bottom toward the door.

When a refrigerator leaks water like yours, it is common for the problem to be nothing more than a clogged defrost drain. When the unit defrosts itself, the frost melt water drips into a pan underneath the evaporator in the freezer, and goes through a tube from there to the bottom outside of the unit. Since the water cant go down this drain, it backs up on the freezer floor, then eventually the kitchen floor.

Leaking water and ice build-up in freezer

There's a drain hole in the freezer side behind the bottom drawer in the back wall that must be clogh ; put hot water into it untill melted the ice and keep pouring water to clean the drain (don't worry , the water goes to an evaporative tray) .Keep the drain clean by putting every 3/4 months half a cup of clorox or bleach.

Maytag Plus MSD2556AEW - frozen puddle on freezer floor

Here I am going to give you a lot of information. Because of the leaking your defrost condensate drain is most likely the reason. All on the page below may not be for your situation and some refrigerators do this over a period of time and the the water has no were to go but the freezer during defrost. Ice build up on bottom of freezer. Water leaks out of freezer possibly from melting. Water leaks onto floor of kitchen.

Your problem is possibly one of two things. The ice maker is leaking or the defrost tray behind the rear panel inside freezer back wall is clogged with ice or something else. If you know its not the ice maker unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel to see if the drain is blocked there, Let me know, Sea Breeze

Freezer leaking water

My Whirlpool has been filling the bottom under the crispers with water and leaking out the vents (?) from the freezer down into the fridge compartment. I finally caught it today being rather loud, probably in a defrost cycle, and it was positively POURING in the fridge. After some more research on this site I removed the freezer bottom tray (1/4" ratchet needed) and found a layer of 1/2" thick ice under the tray. My guess is the drain hole iced up. Removed all the ice from under the tray and on the metal drain run in the back (danger, seemed sharp) and put it all back together. I didn't try to pour hot water down the drain yet, thinking positive thoughts that the drain itself isn't iced all the way to the tray near the floor. Will watch it carefully.

Water accumulating in bottom of freezer and leaking onto floor

Yes the drain is clogged and the water that supouse to go through became ice so it make it worse.Put hot water in the drain hole until it runs through,it'll go to an evaporative pan on top of the compresor to keep it warm and vaporize the water.
