My daughter's 2009 cobalt is leaking gas and we were told by a repaiman that there are a lot of fuel pumps being replaced and therefore hard to come by., I was looking to see if this was recalled as the total cost for the pump and replacement is over $800.00. Advice appreciated, thought of buying the part myself and hiring someone to put it in.
your fuel pump is located inside the gas tank. I therefore fail to understand how it could be leaking, unless the leak is internal and not going on the ground etc.? If you go with an aftermarket instead of factory pump, make sure not to buy the cheapest one. You get what you pay for.your fuel pump is located inside the gas tank. GM had a fuel pump module problem back in those years where the plastic broke , where the delivery hose hooked up to . This caused a substantial leak ,you can't really see the broke part till you drop the tank . I don't know if this was a problem on Malibu's ,I saw this on cobalt's . There was a Factory recall on some ! With a TSB - technical service bulletin ! I'd have a second opinion , call the dealer also .
I researched this and found the following information. Hope it helps: P0455 means a gross leak detected in the Evaporative Emissions System. Some call this a "gas cap" code, because the most common cause a loose or failed gas cap. But it could be caused by any vapor leak in the fuel tank, filler neck, or anywhere else in the vapor management system. If it isn't a gas cap, you will need tol take it someplace where they have a smoke machine that can find the leak using smoke.
fuel pumps need fuel to lubricate the little plastic gears that pump the petrol. No fuel=no lubrication= dead pump. Try a new pump and ensure that there is always enough petrol in the tank. It takes a lot less than 17 degrees to freeze petrol. Have a pressure test done on the fuel manifold to check pump operation. regulator operation and fuel filter.
Get a fuel regulator test done. I have same truck. Had same problem. 1 place told me my trans was bad. Another told me cataltic convertor was bad and that the fuel was coming ok when truck was started but when the gas peddle was down the amount of gas per second went down. Fuel pump is your answer. I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter and nothing else and she drives fine now.i hope this helps. My girl friends saturn was doing the same thing. Fuel pump and fuel filter, runs a heck of allot better now.
has the fuel pump ever been changed?????Sounds like u have enough fuel pressure 4 idle but not enough 4 run.Have it checked...sometimes after getting 2 the pump it's not the pump it's the discharge hose @ 1 to 1-1/2 long dry rotted & losing pressure therefore not running
i have a shop and we have had several cobalts come in with a fuel leak. the lines from the fuel pump assembly on the top of the gas tank is platsic and has either been cracked and broken. it sucks cause there haven't been any afetrmarket set ups to replace it and we had to order a new pump assembly from the dealer. hope this helps
i had a fuel odor in my cobalt and after lowering the fuel tank i found one of the fuel lines coming out of the tank was cracked, while removing the fuel pump both of them snapped right off. way too brittle but a new pump and sending unit (all one assembily) fixed it right up with minimal difficulty and only $250.00.
hope this helps
you might have sucked up some loose particles that were lying in the bottom of the tank, therefore it has clogged your line or filter........... just a thought. hope its helpful
