Question about Brother Sewing Machines

2 Answers

I have a Brother XR-65. The needle bar fell out as I was sewing. I need a repair manual or some instruction on how to secure the needle bar in the machine. I have the bar itself and a pin sized piece of wire that looks as if it fits into the needle bar somehow. Service will cost me over $100 - I purchased my machine at Wal Mart for around $150, so this repair cost is ridiculous!! Please help.

This was happening to me also - you have to tighten a different screw than the one that holds the needle in.

My husband thought the screw was missing - it is actually a plastic screw with a hole in it for a tiny allen wrench.

You can see it in this picture also

If you look at the photo of the screw I attached, you can zoom in and see it has a hexagonal hole.

It is above the flat head needle clamp screw (the one that holds the needle in)

It is REALLY annoying that this screw is mentioned nowhere in the manual, and the hex allen wrench is not included with the machine.

Kind of an important little detail, considering it holds the needle assembly together... you'd think that they would have told you about it.

Hi

That's the needle clamp that fell off. Slip it back into place (make sure you have the 'front' facing forward) and while holding it with your left hand, use the screwdriver in your right hand to tighten the needle clamp screw . To tighten, turn it clockwise. Do not apply strong force when loosening or tightening the needle clamp screw, otherwise certain parts of the sewing machine may be damaged. If you look carefully you should see a small allen head screw on the needle clamp assembly. There should be a J shaped part which goes into a hole on the bottom of the assembly. Reassemble everything, put the assembly back on the needle bar and tighten the screw with an allen wrench:-

BROTHER XR 65 OILING

Sewing machines like the XR-65 should not get oiled by their user. They have sealed bearings. If you suspect a problem with the bearings or other moving parts, you should take the sewing machine to a good sewing machine repair person.

Generally, when the manual gives no lubrication directions, don't add oil. Electronic sewing machines can easily be damaged if excess oil gets into the wrong part of the machine.

I hope this helps.

The thing you put the needle in and their is a wire thing that goes in there...that piece fell out and needle won't stay in...it's a brother XR-35

What fell out was the needle clamp gib - a small wedge-like part that presses on the needle to hold in place.

You may be able to get it repaired or replaced.

Search online for parts, or ask a sewing machine service tech for an estimate for having the machine repaired.

My needle broke and a piece of metal fell out of machine

this sounds like the needle guard it is usually held on by the same screw that holds the needle clamp it should fit so that it comes across the needle at the front to stop your fingers being sown but not interfere with the needle try turning by hand before turning back on.
