I have a Hitachi 27FX28B.. when I turn the television on the picture is fine, within 3-5 minutes though - the picture compresses to a thin vertical line across the middle of the screen (audio is fine). The television is 8 years old.. what is the problem and is it worth fixing?

The set is prone to a few odd issues as well as some common ones.
If you follow power cord inside (ought to go to board mounted on right side wall) there are at least 3 black power relays on that board that are known to stick either open or closed---tapping on them will sometimes cause them to function again for a while---ie if power light does not go out etc.
If you have sound the set will be likely turning off or blanking all three picture tubes for a reason= no vertical sweep or horizontal sweep as that would instantly burn a mark on all three tubes--check the possible relay issue and let me know answers to the questions I have asked above.
I have worked on a lot of this model set and am familiar with it.
about the only common issue (if model listed here is correct) is bad solder connections at the vertical output IC.
Usually in this case jarring the set will cause it to try to open and allow the picture--if no vertical sweep (pic top to bottom) set will blank all 3 tubes to prevent an instant burn mark on them.
If no remote function, unplug set for a minute and plug back in; if not the problem something is wrong in either power supply or sweep circuit of set--
Hi, you have some poor solder connections on the sweep board, this is an inexpensive fix for any tech to do, get it soldered and enjoy, good luck & Happy Holidays
theres a bad capacitor off the sweep power supply or possibly in the main power supply. Most likly though it would be where i mentioned first. There are no user serviceable parts inside this set Unless your a repair person so best thing for you to do is call in a pro to assist you in this repair. Good Luck
ok you have a vert sweep problem and yes its probably connected to in a way to the "tap and fix" problem! Seems to be n intermittant connection on the vertical out put Ic or maybe even on the rgb convergence ic?? The total loss of sweep though tells me that theres two differant problems! Maybe and intemittant connection on the vert output Ic as well as bad connections on the convergence ic??.
