Hi,
I received a similar HP Laserjet Color Printer with same issue for repair/ maintenance.
Actually the problem is with the printer design not the cartridge and it needs professional hands for servicing and cleaning. The mirrors which reflect laser beam get covered with dust and toner. Laser beams are partially reflected due to dust. Hence the image is not produced properly. Note that first magenta goes off, followed by yellow, then cyan and lastly black. this is because of the mirrors placement inside the printer.

Rest assure that the printer requires ONLY CLEANING OF THE MIRRORS, which are inside the printer. For cleaning, the printer's outer covers are required to be removed to reach the inside laser unit, mirror and lenses, which requires professional expertise.

Clean them yourself with dry, soft, lint-free cloth (if you are familiar with such tasks) or get it cleaned by any printer repair/ service professional. Please note that the mirrors, lenses and scanner assembly inside such printers is extremely complex and can get damaged very easily especially the mirrors.

If you need any help in cleaning mirrors and lenses let me know

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Just changed cartridges to refills and clour and black lights flashinghowever we can still print ok. Why are the lights flashing?

The lights are flashing because you are using refilled cartridges. The printer "sees" those cartridges as empty, since it can not know that someone has refilled them. When you put in new cartridges, the lights will stop flashing.
Just ignore the lights and print!

Hope that helps!

What is the replacement printer for HP Laser Jet

This document provides information about replacing the print cartridge for the HP LaserJet 1010 printer series, including life expectancy and replacement instructions. Print cartridge life expectancy The life of the print cartridge depends on the amount of toner that your print jobs require. When printing text on letter/A4-size paper at five percent coverage, the print cartridge lasts an average of 2,000 pages. This assumes that you set the print density to three and disable EconoMode. (These are the default settings.) See Ordering supplies for information on ordering replacement print cartridges. Changing the print cartridge Follow the below instructions to change the print cartridge:
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and remove the old print cartridge. See the recycling information inside the print cartridge box. Figure 1: Removing old print cartridge c00028312.gif CAUTION: To prevent damage, do not expose the print cartridge to light. Cover it with a piece of paper.
  2. Remove the new print cartridge from the packaging, and gently shake it from side to side to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. Figure 2: Gently shaking new print cartridge c00028313.gif
  3. Pull the tab until all the tape is removed from the print cartridge. Put the tab in the print cartridge box to return for recycling. Figure 3: Removing tape from print cartridge c00035442.gif
  4. Insert the print cartridge in the printer, making sure that the print cartridge is in position. Close the print cartridge door. Figure 4: Inserting new print cartridge c00028315.gif

Replacing the print cartridge
  1. Open the print cartridge door, and remove the old print cartridge. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the print cartridge, minimize its exposure to direct light by covering it with a sheet of paper. Figure 1: Removing the print cartridge c01174123.jpg
  2. Remove the new print cartridge from the packaging. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the print cartridge, hold the print cartridge at each end.
  3. Pull the tab until all the tape is removed from the cartridge. Put the tab in the print cartridge box to return for recycling. Figure 2: Removing the sealing tape c01211568.jpg
  4. Gently rock the toner cartridge from front to back to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge. Figure 3: Shaking the print cartridge c01211569.jpg
  5. Insert the print cartridge in the device and close the print cartridge door. Figure 4: Inserting the print cartridge c01174125.jpg CAUTION: If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water. Hot water sets toner into the fabric.

NOTE: When toner is low, faded or light areas appear on the printed page. You might be able to temporarily improve print quality by redistributing the toner. To redistribute the toner, remove the cartridge from the device and gently rock it from front to back.

I have changed all the ink cartridges on my Brother MFC5440CN it

Light/faint prints usually are a result from clogged ink or air bubbles between the cartridge and print head (thus changing cartridge wont fix problem). Try printing the test page print from the machine (Ink Management -> set/ok twice). Answer the question(s) in the display and repeat this up to five times. The colors should be improved after 1-3 test prints usually.
