Epson Stylus Photo R280 general error The printer has worked fine for years. All of a sudden 'general error' starts coming up. I understand this to be something is jammed in it. When I turn it on it goes through the usual start-up routine. The head moves back and forth like it should and then it goes into park position and says 'GENERAL ERROR'. I've checked it out, nothing foreign is in it. I've checked the paper feed, nothing is jammed, everything moves like it's supposed to. HELP!

Hi John

This is a problem with the Encoder sensor hence you need to clean it and make sure there is no Ink on it. The encoder sensor is the sensor which is at the back of the carriage where you can find a plastic strip.

By cleaning it the problem will be solved

Another senario

If the capping unit is having problem only then this error appears. Check and make sure the capping unit is working well.

(Capping unit is on the right side of the printer where the carraige is parked when it is turned off)

I thank you for the quick response.
I'm assuming you mean the plastic strip that runs the full width of the carriage. It has a couple of ink spots at the parking end of it. What can dissolve the ink without hurting the strip?
Also how does the print case come out so I can check to make sure the sensor is clean?

What does Communication Error mean?

I am guessing that you are using Windows 7. If so go to Control panel 'Hardware and Sound' Printers and select Remove a Printer. You may then unplug the printer usb connection and restart your computer. When the computer has restarted , you may go to the link below to download the most current drivers and install them .
Do not plug in the usb connection until you are told to do so. Also, the printer may select a default connection to LPT1 , which is a parallel port connection (apparently this printer likes to do so , and this will give you your "communication error" ). If it does, go to printers in control panel (see above) , right click on the icon for your printer , select "properties" , and left click on the " ports " tab. Make sure that the port selected is USB001 or similar and NOT LPT1.

Why does my epson R280 Givers me a Communication Error, what does this mean

It normally means that the signal between the printer and computer had been corrupted or interrupted. Check that your USB cable is not damaged, unplugged or even slightly loose. Unplug and re-aligns in both ends. Use a different USB port on your computer if you can.
Keep the USB lead and printer away from unshielded mains or hi-voltage cables as as they can corrupt data signals. Next reinstall the printer driver. If all this fails, try your printer and lead on a friends computer. If it works, look for the problem in your laptop otherwise maybe it's time to buy an Epson wireless multifunction printer.

My Epson stylus Photo R280 prints like its printing double and is very unclear..how do I correct this problem

You need to align/clean your ink cartridge. Look under the Printers, select your printer and go to Properties. There should be a tab for maintenance.

Epson stylus photo R280 won't print due to false low on ink

Try using a soft cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol over the metal contacts. Make certain all residue to include spent ink or oil from your fingers have been removed. Let air dry. If your printers Print Head can be removed separately, that is the way to go when cleaning components. It has been known that Print Heads fail also and need replacement.
