250gb WD external has been working well over a year with no problems, which brings me here today; Yesterday morning i went to plug it in a friends house and I was not able to get a reading when connected to my 3.0 USB slot (HP DV7-2237cl). I tried to connect the HD to each of the two 2.0 USB slots and was able to get a brief reading that would last long enough to load the contents in windows explorer, but was turned off and restarted the connection on its own before I could effectively transfer more then about three files. Now in the evening it was not being read by my PC when plugged in but did illuminate the power icon on my HD. On my final attempt (last 2.0 slot) there was an intermittent click but still no reading and a fully illuminated light. Can someone tell me if there is a was to correct this most unfortunate issue; be it a driver to update or task to carry out? I thank you in advance for your time and knowledge. Best Regards, Jason

To start with, this WD file recovery tool may worth taking a try first of all.

If it doesn't help, then take the device for data recovery services if the data is really important to you.

Remember - DO keep the deivice safe from data overritten or physical damage. Regards.

From your description it sounds like the drive is failing. So the first thing to do is determine the condition of the drive. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Or if you need data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask for donations if you are happy with the results: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

MY GARMIN STREETPILOT C310 WORKED THIS MORNING, BUT NOW WILL NOT SWITCH ON?

It is also 7+ years old. in technology years that is like 140 years old. retire it and get a Nuvi.

Remember that time you went to start your car and it worked yesterday but today it would not start... bad stuff happens.

If you are holding out hope, try leaving it plugged into the car or outlet
try holding the power button for a long time (30 sec)
try plugging it into a computer and see if anything happens.

I have had my WD 320GB portable hard drive for a year now and have had no issues with it. I plugged it into my laptop yesterday and instead of showing up as a removable storage drive, it is now coming up...

To be honest, all the external portable drive sometimes just stops working for no apparent reason even if you take very good care of it. If it cannot be formatted, maybe it's already a hardware problem. If the drive is under warranty, you might want to bring it to where you bought it and ask for a replacement. Also, these brands have the Data Recovery systems where they recover your files if the hard drive becomes unusable.

You've either got some intermittent hardware problem (bad USB cable, flaky power-adapter, dying disk-drive inside the enclosure) or you've got a "software" problem, but it is unlikely that multiple PCs would have the same problem.

So, I'll bet that it is "hardware". Note: if you have any "important" files on it, copy them, while you still can!

Access W.D.'s web-site, and read through their "warranty" section.
They recommend a "drive fitness" software tool, that can test & analyze your disk-drive, to see if it is "good" or if it "fails" those diagnostics, indicating that it may soon "die".
They also tell you how to contact W.D. to exercise the warranty.

Check the warranty-status -- if the warranty still is valid, W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program; you can buy a new W.D. device from the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount. Or, remove the disk-drive from the enclosure, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it, to "revive" your external storage device (assuming that the disk-drive itself was the problem).

Try running Scan Disk and defrag. Otherwise use a program like SpinRite to do a low level scan of the disk.

Dead USB external HDD. Disk spins, light is on, but no one is home.

Hi,

it does sound like the Hard drive enclosures circuit board may be the problem, there are ways to get the data off that will void your warranty, or there are services you can send it to who will get your data back for you and then replace it.

Let me know what your preference is and I can assist you either way.

Go to BIOS (Press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS). Check if the Power state is in S1. Ensure that USB setting is in Hi-Speed.
Restart the computer and try using the device. this should fix. Let us know the result.
