Had similar problem on KitchenAid KSRA25ILSS side-by-side, only the whole controls stopped responding (i.e. fridge/freezer got warm). Pulled the plug and reset the controller and is now running OK (knock on wood). Saved $70 service charge...so far.

Re: Whirlpool Refrig Side by side
The problem is almost certainly in the controller or its power supply.
Try pulling the plug for a minute or two - for some reason the display portion of the controller may have been sent out to lunch by a power surge or alpha particle. It woudn't be the first time.
Check for bad connections between the display panel and the power supply and solder joints on the controller board.
With everything else operational, a bad microcontroller chip is not that likely but is still a possibility.

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...
Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...
In your model , the refrig section light , gets its' power from the control board . When the lights stop working , so will the light for the temp adjustment display . The control board is located behind the refrig , at the bottom , on the left side , inside a white box . It is held on by 2 screws . The part costs around $ 80.00 , and is easily replaceable .
Open the freezer door and on the right side , make dure the slide is in the on position . If the red light flashes twice , then pauses , flashes twice , pauses , consistently , then close the flap door on the left side of the freezer . The light should go off . If these tests work , then the cut-off optics are good , and the icemaker needs replaced , due to the cubes not dumping . Also check the coils under the front of the refrig , to make sure they are clean of dust , lint , etc.
i would alssume(knowing about this refrig) that the leectronic control board hasgone bad. the board is located behind the unit next to the compressor, inside a white housing, if you rmeove this board yull probably see a "burn" on one or more ofthe resistors, this is what controls the lighting in refrig sect, not affecting the cooling but only lights
