Dell Inspiron 5160 Notebook Logo

I have a Dell Inspiron 5160 Laptop that has been working decently for me for a while. I have always had issues with the laptop recognizing the ac adapter but usually been able to spend a few hours and getting it change its mind and work and charge. Recently I was using the computer while using power from the ac. My cat ran into the back of my screen and caused it to slam closed. After ward, the laptop powered down. It will not turn back on through any normal means. I have a constant orange light in the front. I see no response when plugging in or unplugging the power cord. Any help??

Hi there!

First the problem that you were having with the ac adapter can be fix by just updating your computers BIOS.

Now for the computer not turning on try this, first remove battery make sure ac adapter is unplugged then press power button for 5 seconds after that put in battery and then press FN + POWER at the same time this triggers the diagnostic on your computer if it runs then just wait if it will give you an error message. If it fails then try to use just the ac adapter that means battery should be unplugged.

Hope this helps!.

    Hi!

After all the troubleshooting steps and still nothing is happening then this problem leads to a hardware problem, there's a high chance that the motherboard is defective mostly on the power connector. The first issue that you had having a hard time charging is already a sign.

What I suggest is you contact DELL take a look if they can do anything for the motherboard, tell them all the things that you have done so they won't ask yo to repeat it. Now if they asks you to buy a new motherboard I suggest you get a new computer because it will be much cheaper that way but it will be your final decision which one you'll take.

    Hope this helps!

Dell Inspiron 5160. When plugged in then power light lights up (before hitting the power button like my 5150) and the battery light is amber. The 5160 will not do anything - not power on at all.

Hello.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

My Dell 5160 laptop slows down with the AC adapter plugged in.

try running ur laptop using the adaptor without the battery in it's place and run it with just the battery...note the difference....it may be a power surge/short issue....some times the battery is supplying power along with the adaptor to the notebook and the power circuit in there is not able to take dual power....check your power options setting in Control Panel...

also do this

clean ur system use Tuneup Utility get it from my website Dowload page
www.sureshayyar.110mb.com
use all the tools and option in that tool...the best is 1n Click Maint in there .....it fixes all ur issues...

Fine tune audio on Dell Inspiron 5160

The only way you are going to get any enhanced audio out of a 5160 is with an external USB audio device.

One option: PCMCIA Sound Blaster® Audigy® 2 ZS Notebook

AC adapter not recognized

If you don't get any errors when you startup on battery then all you have to do is call Dell. Get work order number and send them the laptop and adapter. They are very fast. I sent a laptop to them last month and I had it back in 3 days! I was surprised.

You can either buy a new motherboard or get the power connector on ebay and solder it on yourself(much cheaper solution)
