The picture on my TV has suddenly become compressed in the vertical dimension. It's only filling about 50% of the vertical size, at the center of the screen.
It's definitely a misadjustment with the picture tube, because the problem is the same for TV input and VCR.
How can I adjust the vertical hold, or whatever?

Re: Picture is compressed vertically
Nope sorry to say that its not an adjustment and most likly a capacitor in the vertical sweep curcuit. if you know how to troubleshoot solid state electronics then use a mutimeter and measure the b+ voltage on the vertical output and see how much you have. If its below 20 volts thenb its the filter cap. off the flyback xformer . This is a very very common problem and you can locate this part without a schematic by looking at the cap> #s and find the one with the same seris # as the other vert parts do ie-r4**,c4** so on and so forth. If you replace this and not much chenge then replace the vert output IC. There could also be a small cap right next to the driver/video ic with the same seris # called a wave shaper cap. Could be bad. NOE there are 100"s of volts inside a tv set even when its unplugged and I would advise that IF tou dont have the know how or experience to work on this then Please take to a servicer in your area as you can get one heck of a bite that Ive seen throw grown men against the wall(including myself!!) Good Luck

Possible failure of the VERTICAL SECTION of the deflection circuit. It is possible that the areas related to the vertical circuit is checked , check for weak capacitors near the output vertical drive. Also a faulty vertical coil- deflection coil- can result in half picture. A vertical signal test can confirm.
hi, You have a problem on vertical deflection. If you have basic knowledge in electronics you can fix it by replacing the electrolytic capacitors (100uf/50v,470uf/50v,47uf/50 )near vertical ic. sometimes these caps becomes leaky.
This is not an adjustment. There are some components that have become thermo sensitive with age and use. The fault is in the vertical deflection circuit area. Very often it can be a number of electrolytic capacitors.
An experienced TV tech can service this for you. After the fix, the TV should work as normal.
You could have a simple loose connection on the vertical output IC . Sometimes you can tap the board and the picture will fill out . Or the IC could have failed . It will also take out the resistor that supplys the voltage to the vertical IC . If you take it apart to work on be careful as you can be shocked if you don't know what your doing . Most repair shops charge $50 to $80 to repair . Good luck
My LG tv has suddenly got a problem with the picture. Whilst watching the tv with no problems at all,
the picture was suddenly reduced to a thin vertical line down the centre of the screen
and an awful smell seemed to come from the tv
There is a short ckt in your tv in horl. section.
1 isolate power from horizontal section.
2 check for normal output from power supply.
3 check parts in horl output section
a hor.output transistor
b diode & cap in h/output trnsformerckt.
c check for print.
d if all are ok check for eht transformer.
e if every thing becomes then reconnect hor output section supply.
f put on the set.
