It can be disheartening to open your Whirlpool Gold dishwasher and find
that the device is full of dirty water that has not drained from a
previous cycle. Although you certainly would rather have no problems,
having a problem with the washing machine not draining as well as it
should is one of the easiest-remedied problems to have. Fixing this
problem doesn't require you to pay a repairman; you should be able to doityourself.
Open the cabinet under the sink.
2
Unscrew the clamp that is holding the drain hose to the garbage disposal valve.
3
Insert a screwdriver into the
valve opening and tap the handle of the screwdriver with a hammer. Doing
this will remove the knockout plug from the opening. The knockout plug
is designed to be used for garbage disposals that are not connected to
dishwashers. People often fail to remove the knockout plug when
installing a dishwasher to the disposal.
4
Insert tongs into the top of the garbage disposal opening and remove the knockout plug from the device.
5
Replace the drain hose and screw the clamp back into place.
Do not open the dishwasher until the cycle completes. A green indicator
light on the front of a Maytag dishwasher will let you know the cycle
has completed. If you open the dishwasher before the cycle is over,
close the door and press "Start/Resume."
Remove the knockout plug from the disposer inlet if the dishwasher is
connected to a food disposer. Place the tip of a screwdriver along the
edge of the knockout plug, which is on the side of the disposer. Tap
against the head of the screwdriver with a hammer until the plug comes
loose.
Inspect the drain hose for kinks. Make sure it is not bent or pinched in a way that would impede the flow of water through it.
Use your hands to clean food from the drain in the dishwasher. A
buildup of food can block the drain and not allow water to freely flow
from the inside of the dishwasher.
Open your breaker box and check to see that the switch that controls
your kitchen appliances is flipped to the "on" position. A switch
flipped to "off" means your appliance has no electricity. The
dishwasher will not drain without power.
Even though Maytag dishwashers range from simple to advanced, any type of Maytag dishwasher can potentially have a problem draining. In many cases, the failure to drain is directly related to a blockage and not caused by electrical or other operational problems. There is a high probability that you can repair a Maytag dishwasher that is not draining without the help of a professional.
1. Press the "Start/Resume" button on the front of the dishwasher if the dish-washing cycle was cut off before it was able to complete. Close the appliance door within three seconds of pressing the button.
2. Remove the screw that connects the drain hose to the disposal inlet. Place the tip of a flat head screwdriver in the inlet and along the top edge of the knockout plug, which is located just inside the inlet. Tap the end of the screwdriver with a hammer as many times as needed until the knockout plug gets moved out of its place. The knockout plug does not allow water to flow and causes the water in the dishwasher to backup.
3. Pull out the dishwasher and look for kinks or pinches in the drain hose. The hose must be free of defects to work properly. 4. Flip the switch to run the food disposal to ensure there are not food items inside that would prohibit the free flow of water between the disposal and the dishwasher. 5. Open your fuse box and flip the switch for the breaker associated with the dishwasher to the "On" position if it happens to be set to "Off" because of a power surge. I hope you find it very helpful. if you have a garbage disposal then the "knockout" plug may not have been removed to accommodate the dishwasher. (it is located inside the disposal where the dishwasher line connects to the disposal). It usually takes a hammer and chisel to knock this plug out. Likewise the knockout port may be clogged with food and grease creating the same symptom. Hope this helps.
I am assuming you are removing it for a dishwasher hook up? Regardless put a punch, drift or worse case scenario a screwdriver through the inlet to the back of the plug and drift it with a hammer. Dont be afraid to hit it with a punch because it will require a hard enough hit
Hi, You need to punch out the plug from the outside. The plug will fall into the disposal and you can reach in to remove it.
I use a small screw driver and punch through the plug in a few spots to weaken the plug. This will allow the plug to release easier.
Please let me know if this helps you at all or if I can assist you further.
Hello sschneid,
New disposals have a knockout plug at the point of entry for the dishwasher, I assume you knew that and removed it. If not, then detach the dishwasher drain hose from the disposal and take off the hose adapter from the body of the disposal assembly.. with power disabled.. use a screwdriver to push the knockout plug out and remove it from the disposal grind compartment. Manufacturers leave that in there for peopel who need a disposal but don't have a dishwasher. Get back to me if that is not the solution and I wil help you resolve it..
Regards,
Rick
