Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

My Dyson smells like a wet dog and makes my whole house stink. I checked and there is no clog. What can be done to make it smell better, is there an airfreshner that can be put on the filter? I love the vacuum but it just smells so bad.

I have the Dyson DC 28. After cleaning out the filter multiple times I still had the wet dog smell coming out from the vacuum. I called Dyson's support line. The rep told me to put dryer sheets in the clear plastic bin and let it run for about 5-10 mins, make sure the bin is clear of all debris first. I did it and it worked. Not only is the smell gone, the dryer sheets removed all the remaining dust stuck in the bin. I was happy!

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. We'd strongly recommend against using air fresheners in your machine, as these could cause damage.

The filter in your cleaner should be washed at least once every 3-6 months; you can see the correct way to do this in the video linked below. Use cold water without detergent, and make sure the filter is totally dry before replacing it - this may take up to 24 hours.

My Dyson stinks. Literally and figuratively. It seems to be coming from the brush part of the vacuum, which I can't get apart. I hate this vacuum so much I can't put it into words. I bought it based totally on the ads and spent more than I would on 5 vacuums and have hated it since day one. It's so heavy it hurts my wrist to use and I can't lift it up stairs. It takes days for the filter to dry. The cord does not retract. The hose has such a long metal portion it's impossible to really get under furniture with it, unless I'm lying completely on the floor. The plastic cap broke off simply by using it. My entire house stinks because of it. It's the worst appliance purchase I've ever made...and I once had a dryer catch on fire!! It's 3 am here and the smell from it sitting in a closed broom closet on the floor below me woke me up! I'm going to Amazon and ordering a vacuum I can use.

Mine is exactly the same. Like you I hate it and find it so heavy and not easy to use. This is my fith Dyson and I would happily go back to any of the others now. Thinking of a different company altogether now and give up on Dyson. I had hoped that you found a solution and i could copy :(

Why does my dyson filter smell of dog *** when i let it dry before replacing it after washing

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

As you'll probably be aware, DC59 has one washable filter, engineered to last the lifetime of the vacuum. We recommend washing this at least once a month using cold water without detergent, as shown in the video below:

Always allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it - this may take at least 24 hours. Replacing the filter when damp could cause damage to the machine not covered under guarantee, and could also contribute to any odour coming from the vacuum. It may help to place the filter somewhere warm to dry, such as by a radiator, in an airing cupboard or on a sunny window sill.

Please note, the cyclone pack and clear bin should never be washed or submerged in water as this could cause permanent damage to the vacuum. However, it is possible to separate the clear bin from the cyclone pack as shown below. You can then use a soft brush to remove any fluff or debris from the mesh shroud, and you can wipe the inside of the clear bin with a damp cloth to remove any clinging dust particles. Make sure the bin is completely dry before reassembling.

My Dyson Animal vacuum smells horribly of dog. It's worse than my dog has ever smelled - even at his worst. How do I take apart the Animal to clean it properly? Can I use a weak water/Chlorox solution...

hi Donna.
Complete removal of pet hair from the home is a quandary many pet owners face. The Dyson Animal series vacuums use centrifugal force to remove animal hair from carpets, floors, curtains and upholstery. The high-powered vacuum is bagless, allowing you to extract pet hair from surfaces without worrying about running out of vacuum bags. As your Dyson Animal vacuum is exposed to pet hair and dander, a smell can develop. Similar to other small appliances, a vacuum needs periodic cleaning to keep it looking and smelling clean. When you use basic cleaning and deodorizing techniques, you can get the smell out of your Dyson Animal vacuum.

Step 1

Remove the bagless receptacle for pet hair according to the directions provided for your Dyson Animal vacuum. Hold the receptacle upside down inside a trash bag and tap the bottom to remove pet hair and dirt.

Step 2

Mix 1/2 tsp. of dishwashing detergent with 1/2 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dip a clean cloth into the soap solution and wring it out.

Step 3

Wash the inside and outside of the receptacle with the cloth to remove dirt and dander that cause odor. Rinse the receptacle with a cloth dampened with water. Dry it thoroughly with another cloth.

Step 4

Remove the HEPA filter from your Dyson Animal vacuum. Pick visible clumps of pet hair off the filter and discard them. Flush the filter with cool water to wash out dirt and hair. Rinse the filter until the water runs clean. Gently squeeze the filter and allow it to air-dry for up to 12 hours to ensure it dries completely.

Step 5

Moisten a cloth with undiluted vinegar. Wipe off the exterior of the vacuum with the vinegar. Deodorize the receptacle and interior areas, where the bagless receptacle and filter go, by wiping them with the vinegar-moistened cloth. Dry the vacuum with a clean cloth.

Step 6

Place two drops of vanilla extract on a cotton ball. Drop the cotton ball into the receptacle before securing it to the vacuum to prevent odor from building up. Vanilla extract is an effective natural odor absorber.

hope this helps you out.

Vacuum gives off a strange smell (stink) and sounds strange

Have you replaced the post motor filter? It could be time to do that.
Perhaps your cyclones are clogged as well. You can find steps to disassemble and clean your cyclone, pretty easy actually. Only 6 parts inside there and they only go together one way so you can't screw it up. Search google for dc14 cyclone disassembly and you'll probably find the video. I just did my DC17 and it took about an hour total to take apart, clean and then reassemble. You can also take the opportunity to wash all the parts and disinfect with a mild water bleach solution. That'll help with the smell.
I am betting though that your post motor and premotor filters are the blame for the smell.
I bought my DC 17 from some lady who used it to clean her cat's litter boxes. Cyclones were totally clogged after only 6 months. What do you expect from poop and wet kitty litter. She said it was junk and bought a $1500 Kirby in it's place. She's gonna have some new and interesting smells with that machine sucking up wet kitty litter.

Sweeper smells stinks whole house up when running

Several questions:
What does the smell seem to be? If rubber, check the belt and brushroll for free rotation. If a musty smell, check the bag, it may need replaced with a new paper bag. If it has an electrical smell, like hot insulation, then the motor needs checked.

How to get rid of dog smell

I had this problem along with a clogged filter. I used the solution for clogged filter here on Fixya and the dog smell went away too. It has to do with the flange on the cylinder getting pushed up out of position. Give it a try.

Stinks!

Cleaning and replacing the bag may help-it sounds like it may have gotten wet at one time. You couls also sprinkle baking soda lightly over your carpet and that may help absorb odours in the system. If the hose is detachable and any other pieces you can wash them with a vinegar solution.
Hope that helps. tc
