My lovely camcorder has decided it won't play back my tapes properly. The picture breaks up and the sound too. It's intermittent - sometimes it happens after about 5 seconds sometimes not at all - sometimes immediately. I can't figure it out. Anything I can do?

Indeed it seems that there was a really stubborn bit of dirt on the heads. I had to use the cleaning tape several times to ultimately have a clear picture on record and playback. thanks again ,but successive cleaning can help for an effective cleaning of the tape path and heads.
If you are referring to the JVC GR-DVL520, yes it does play Mini DV tapes, as well as records to them. It will not play Mini DV tapes that were recorded on an HDV camera. HDV is used by any Mini DV camera that records HD video.
The heads are probably dirty. First you can try to let a tape run through from start to end and see if it cleans the head. then try running in reverse play scan. Next try a head cleaner tape if you have not yet. If these things do not get your picture back you should take it to a repair shop, I do not recomend taking camcorders apart for cleaning at home. Full size VCR's are ok to clean your self with instructions but not camcorders because they are vary easy to damage worse without experiance and proper tools.
the clicking is from the capstain turning the tape -- and perhaps the metal cage holding the tape.. if it is bent then the movement of the capstain may be pushing it in an eccentric fashion.
Usually if there is no impact injury involved or nagging intermittent past problems, you probably have a head cleaning issue. Try a dry type (reccomended) cleaning tape. Should be able to purchase at Best Buy or similar store.
Good luck,

When playing the tape in the camera itself, do you hear sound? If so, its something with the connection cable... is not, you will need a professional repair, you can do nothing except the head clean which you did?
Sorry.
