Turn of the power ,turn on the power holding the button ,wait, then when the "drum" light is burning wait a sec then press the button again ,the printer will "dump" whats in its tiny 0.5mb memory and start a self diagnosis and will begin to print the results of the test .. Dont ask . after a week of trying to get this fuser malfunction error to stop ,it now works well ,and ive printed more than 100 pages today.. think it has something to do with the capasitor suppling power to the memory and this memory needs to be cleared of errors before the printer can operate normally again.

Here is another home remedy you can try....Start with the white paper trick mentioned on below link. I used punches from my hole punch with a little glue from a
    glue stick.

Try this.

  • Slid the tab on the top right from right to left 20 times.
  • Reinstall the drum and toner.
This should do it.

Brother HL1440 has dirty lines on copy how can I clean. Is there something I can buy I am not mechanically inclined.

its the drum or the toner. if you have an old toner run a test with it. If it clears up its the toner cartridge. If not its the drum unit. I sell the toner cartridges for 40 and drum for 65. Steven 818-888-0006

Low print quality

It depends upon the number of prints you have done since Feb and the toner cartridge capacity. Some toner cartridges have 2500 page capacity others have 5000 pages or more.
If you think you have not exceeded or reached the cartridge capacity, take it out of the printer and give it a shake in a horizontal position to distribute the toner evenly across the drum and place it back in the printer. This also works when the toner is nearly empty.

CC and drum Icon will not go out after changing toner cartridge

This Machine needs a copy cartridge. Replacing the toner will not clear it. The copy cartridge is the drum unit which is why the drum light is on. With the new copy cartridge a chip on the cartridge will reset the counter and clear the "CC" and the drum light. If you cant find this I can send you one. I believe on this model it is user replaceable.

Flashing red light

On the alarm and data light blinking, it is saying the toner cartridge is empty. You will need to replace it. Once in a while you can remove the toner cartridge and shake it and have it work for a little while longer. This does not work all the time however.
If you can't get it to work by shaking it, you will need to purchase a new toner cartridge.

When you have the new cartridge, you will need to slide the blue corona wire cleaner back and forth. This is just in front of the toner cartridge in the drum unit on the top of the drum unit. There is a small light blue colored piece of plastic with an arrow in it that you will just push back and forth. This will help the drum unit do its job better.

Printer problems

All four lights flashing indicated a problem only a service center can repair.

Press the Go button and a new set of indicators will appear.

The yellow toner light only indicates a fuser unit failure.
The yellow drum light only indicates a laser unit failure.
The yellow toner light AND the red paper light indicates a main motor failure.
The red paper light only indicates a PCB failure (Printed Circuit Board).

The only thing you can do at this point is to actually UNPLUG the power cord for 24 hours and then retry or if that fails take it to a service center or better yet go pay the $89 for a new unit.

Hope this helps.
